Case Advisor (Grade 5) Office of the Deputy Commissioner at The Competition Commission

Key Accountabilities

The main responsibilities of the incumbent will, inter alia, include:

• Provide strategic and technical support to the Deputy Commissioner in the execution of the Commission’s mandate.
• Review and provide opinions and strategic advice on cases before the Commission.
• Provide the Deputy Commissioner with briefings on matters dealt with at Executive Committee meetings and other relevant institutional forums.
• Support the Deputy Commissioner’s decision-making through appropriate legal, economic and policy analysis.
• Provide guidance and technical support to case teams, as and when required, ensuring that investigation outputs are based on sound theoretical concepts.
• Conduct research and provide advice on developments in competition law, economics and policy in South Africa and internationally.
• Provide advice on relevant economic and competition policy developments.
• Lead and support special projects as required by the Deputy Commissioner.
• Prepare speeches, presentations, briefings and other strategic material for the Deputy Commissioner, including in collaboration with relevant internal stakeholders.
• Assist with engagements with government and other relevant stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain relationships with domestic and international policymakers and stakeholders in the fields of competition law and economics.
• Liaise effectively with relevant internal stakeholders in support of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and procedures relating to case management.
• Participate in Commission committees, task teams and other relevant forums as required.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly experienced competition law/economics professional who meets the following requirements:

• A four-year degree in Law or Economics.
• An LLM or Masters degree in Law or Economics will be an advantage.
• A minimum of 8 - 10 years’ experience in competition law or competition economics.
• Strong understanding of Competition Law or Competition Economics.
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret complex documents and provide sound strategic advice.
• Strong research, investigation and analytical capability.
• High-level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare speeches, articles, briefings and presentations on complex matters.
• Strong diplomacy, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
• Strong project and case-management capability.
• Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel and PowerPoint.
