Deputy General Counsel

Primary role of the Deputy General Counsel – Africa is to  provide expert and strategic legal advice to management. Set up internal governance policies and manage the impact of external factor. Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of any decision or course of action.

Key Responsibilities 

• Provide expert and strategic legal advice to management.
• Reviewing and approving initiatives which are likely to have a material impact from a regulatory perspective or on Group reputation.
• Anticipate issues and estimate risks strategically
• Create associations of trust and respect with key stakeholders
• Set internal governance policies and manage the impact of external factors.
• Offer support on litigation & settlements and bankruptcy procedures
• Deal with complex, significant matters that cut across legal and related areas.
• Base your decision-making process on ethics and integrity.
• Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of any decision or course of action.
• Identify proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risks.
• Meet legal objectives.
• Keep abreast of legislative changes.
• Draft agreements that minimize risks and maximize legal rights

Strategic / Operational

Employee Management

• Assigns, supervises, and reviews the work performance of subordinates.
• Plans, organises, leads, and develops subordinates' work plans.
• Promotes teamwork, provides support, manages and evaluates performance by creating and maintaining individual development plans and performance contracts for subordinates.
• Recommends and approves development plans.
• Develops and coaches team members and subordinates.

Qualifications & Experience

• Legal degree (e.g. B Proc, LLB)
• Admitted Attorney with a minimum of 8 years post-admission commercial legal experience
• Experience preferably corporate in-house or commercial law firm
• Previous experience in the mining industry and French-speaking countries would be a plus
• Proven general counselling experience in an industrial environment would be advantageous.
• Overall broad legal knowledge (corporate law, litigations, labour law, etc.).
• In-depth understanding of how legal issues affects organizations.
• Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives
• Well-versed in how business operate with financial acumen.
