    Economist: Monetary Policy and Financial Markets

    Purpose of the Role

    • To conduct research and policy analysis on monetary policy, financial markets and the external accounts to support evidence-based macroeconomic policy advice for the division and produce reports on economic data releases, support stakeholder engagements efforts and provide inputs to Chapter 2 of the Budget Review and MTBPS.

    Qualification/s Requirements

    • A Grade 12 is required coupled with a minimum National Diploma (equivalent to NQF level 6) in Economics or Econometrics or Finance or Statistics or Business Science or Data Science or Accounting or Mathematics Business Science or Data Science;
    • Bachelors degree (equivalent to NQF level 7) will be an added advantage;
    • A minimum 3 years’ experience is required in policy analysis/ academics or within an economic consulting environment;
    • Knowledge and experience of principles of research methodology;
    • Knowledge and experience in analysis of economic trends; and
    • Knowledge and experience of the South African economic trends and sources of data and information.?

    Key Performance Areas

    Economic research, policy analysis, and assessments of policy proposals:

    • Assist in the research and analysis of monetary policy, financial markets and the external account;
    • Provide inputs into memorandums to the Minister and DG on economic developments in the economy;
    • Produce independent research papers on relevant economic issues;
    • Produce commentary on economic data releases;
    • Provide inputs to reports on developments in the SA economy disseminated to internal stakeholders; and
    • Provide data in user-friendly format to internal stakeholders upon request.

    Support and build strong stakeholder relations:

    • Provide inputs into speeches, presentations and memorandums; 
    • Engage and participate in seminars on economic policy issues; and
    • Engage stakeholders on policy and related issues.

    Chapter 2 of Budget and MTBPS inputs and assumptions:

    • Provide inputs into Chapter 2 of Budget Review and MTBPS;
    • Assist with number checking and proof reading of Budget Chapters; and
    • Provide inputs into the quarterly assumptions’ meetings.
