    Field Ranger (Level 4) - Kogelberg Nature Reserve Complex - Stony Point

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    KRA 1: Support the implementation of targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives to enhance biodiversity resilience.

    • Assist with Integrated Work Plans and IAPO planning, implementation, tracking and reporting.
    • Implement ecological matrix and priority projects for Stony Point Colony and the greater Kogelberg Complex.
    • Implementation and monitoring of conservation and restoration initiatives to protect functioning seabird breeding populations at Stony Point.
    • Participate in any disaster management responses at a local level including fires, flooding, oil spills, disease monitoring and surveillance.

    KRA 2: Support landscape conservation and stewardship in ways that address biodiversity loss.

    • Support the implementation of the African Penguin BMP and other species conservation plans and/or initiatives.
    • Implement actions to improve the conservation status of priority species and ecosystems.
    • Engage and maintain functional partnerships to address biodiversity loss.
    • Implement the biodiversity legal mandate through compliance and enforcement actions.
    • Participate and contribute to Environmental Awareness, Education and Capacity building interventions.

    KRA 3: Promote the biodiversity economy and enhance biodiversity access and sustainable use.

    • Support the implementation of job creation opportunities through the EPWP programme.
    • Participate in innovative partnership opportunities linked to seabird management and marine and coastal management.
    • Accommodate external and internal researchers, in the most applicable manner to achieve research objectives whilst respecting the integrity of SPNR.
    • Ensure CapeNature tourism products are well managed and maintained / ensure infrastructure is fit for purpose.
    • Maintain and improve Infrastructure, equipment, and asset management processes.

    KRA 4: Advocate for behavioural change and promote voluntary compliance.

    • Provide support to Stakeholder Engagements.
    • Provide support in convening Protected Area Advisory Committee meetings and maintaining good relations with local community and stakeholders.
    • Conduct compliance inspections to monitor access for Tourism and Non-Tourism User Groups (Contractors, Researchers, Project Partners).
    • Implementation of the Integrated Compliance Plan on and Off Reserve and carry out law enforcement patrols.
    • Act as an Ecological Control Officer for Film crews and production teams.

    KRA 5: Assume accountability for ensuring performance, governance, and risk management.

    • Supervise the EPWP team, monitors and volunteers.
    • Conduct regular infrastructure inspections which feeds into maintenance plans for the Reserve and assist with maintenance and service of facilities.
    • Implement all relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies and standards and ensure adherence thereto.
    • Assist with risk assessments and quality assurance audits, including Occupational Health and Safety.
    • Facilitating knowledge exchanges and peer learning opportunities at the Stony Point Nature Reserve and greater Kogelberg Complex.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • National Diploma in Nature Conservation or Marine Biology or Marine Sciences.
    • Seabird Handling Certification and experience.
    • At least 2 years of job-related experience with an emphasis on seabird conservation.
    • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, QGIS)
    • A valid EB driver’s license.
    • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
    • Working knowledge of seabird conservation, data collection and interpretation, habitat restoration and disaster management.
    • No criminal record.
