Minimum Requirements:
Be in possession of a grade 12 certificate or equivalent
Have 2 to 5 years’ underground experience in Fire Master duties.
Demonstrate ability for high-level report writing in English and be computer literate.
Have a Code 8 (EB) driver’s license.
Advantageous:
HAZMAT First Responder and or HAZMAT Operational.
Surface and underground fire fighting experience
Experience at supervisory level.
Tertiary qualification in firefighting engineering
Trade certificate (Artisan-Instrument Mechanician / Technician)
Intermediate certificate in mine environmental control
First Aid Certificate
Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment.
Key Competencies:
Knowledge of the relevant legislation:
National Building Regulations Act 103 of 1977.
Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996.
Knowledge of the applicable SANS – South Africa National Codes and Standards
Knowledge of fire prevention policies, procedures, and regulations
Effective planning and designing of fire detection systems; fire prevention procedures and emergency procedures
Have ability to liaise with internal and external parties.
Have skills and competencies in risk assessment methodologies
Duties and Responsibilities:
Carry out duties as prescribed in the Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
Conduct legal inspections and audits as determined by legislation and organizational procedures. Report such findings to the employer.
Conduct accident / incident investigations as and when required, especially with regards to fires and associated incidents. Provide recommendations in this regard.
Promote emergency awareness.
Maintain firefighting equipment and fire systems effectiveness and availability.
Compile and maintain relevant code of practices, procedures and standards relating to emergency response.
