Fishroom Assistant (Cape Town) (Airport Industria) at Econo Foods

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

• To support the daily operations of the fish room by assisting with handling, packing, cleaning, and basic preparation of fish products.
• The Fish room Assistant helps maintain high hygiene standards, product quality, and efficient workflow within the processing facility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Product Handling & Support

• Assist with unpacking, weighing, and organizing fresh or frozen fish deliveries.
• Prepare fish for processing by cleaning, rinsing, or sorting by type and size.
• Supply filleters and production team with fish as needed to maintain workflow.

Packaging & Labelling

• Pack finished fish products according to order specifications and company standards.
• Weigh and label products accurately using scales and labelling machines.
• Ensure correct packaging materials and methods are used (vacuum seal, trays, cling wrap, etc.).

Hygiene & Sanitation

• Clean equipment, work surfaces, floors, and bins regularly throughout the shift.
• Assist with deep cleaning of the fishroom at end of day or as scheduled.
• Follow all hygiene, PPE, and food safety protocols as per HACCP or company policies.

Stock Control & Records

• Help with product rotation using FIFO principles (First In, First Out).
• Report any discrepancies in weight, quality, or quantity to the supervisor.
• Maintain basic production or cleaning logs as directed.

General Assistance

• Assist the fishroom team with manual tasks as needed (e.g., moving crates, disposing of waste, replenishing supplies).
• Support stocktaking or inventory checks when required.
• Carry out any ad-hoc duties assigned by the Fishroom Supervisor.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent qualification.
• Proven experience of at least 3-5 years in a similar position, with a preference for experience within the FMCG Retail industry.
• Previous experience in a food handling or processing environment is advantageous.
• On-the-job training will be provided.
