    Head: Student Counselling(Department of Student Affairs)

    Job Purpose

    The incumbent will play a significant role in managing, coordinating and supporting the Student Counselling Unit within the Department of Student Affairs and in ensuring that the Unit is in line with the strategic plan of the University. The incumbent will be responsible for the development, review and implementation of the relevant student counselling policies and procedure and alignment with other relevant structures in the Department and in the University.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Managing and providing leadership in the organisation, planning and administration of all operations within the Counselling Unit, including finances and human resources:
      • Facilitating the smooth running of all service delivery activities to maximum and efficient effect;
      • Planning and maintaining control over the financial management of the Department to best meet the purpose and goals of the Department;
      • Managing staff development within the unit to meet the needs of the operations;
    • Organising the counselling services for the University to improve the quality of service delivery in terms of effectiveness and efficiency in the Unit:
      • Planning and overseeing the service delivery of activities for the best efficient benefit of the student body;
    • Playing an active role as part of the Department of Student Affairs management team:
      • Playing and active role in the DSA efforts to meet the larger university goals as identified through the vision and mission of the institution;
    • Coordinating and supervising departmental projects and campaigns that reside within the Unit, and in the synergy with relevant partners:
      • Planning and managing the execution of joint partnership project to meet the service delivery goals of the Unit;
    • Research:
      • Conducting research to support the University’s core function of research;
      • Conducting impact studies and other forms of research to support evidence based innovation and improvement in the Unit;
    • Developing, reviewing and implementing policies relevant to the Unit:
      • Designing and revising policies to ensure effective processes within activities of the Unit;
      • Designing and reviewing Standard operating Procedures for activities within the Unit;
    • Promoting diversity and participation in the uptake of student counselling services:
      • Planning and overseeing the promotion and accessibility of services within the Unit;
      • Ensuring that services are equally accessible and visible to all members of the student body on all campuses.

       

    Minimum Requirements

    • MA or MSc degree in Clinical or Counselling Psychology;
    • Registration as Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with HPCSA;
    • Seven years’ experience:
      • As a registered independent-practice Clinical or Counselling Psychologist;
      • Working therapeutically with students/young people as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist;
      • Management experience.

       

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Evidence based psychotherapeutic interventions;
    • SA code of Conduct and Ethics for Psychologist;
    • Sound knowledge of diagnostics;
    • Knowledge of tertiary educational institutional systems;
    • Knowledge of HPCSA and Professional Board for Psychology regulations and requirements for intern training;
    • Microsoft Office knowledge, the ability to work on an electronic record system, and competency with internet use;
    • Sound administrative skills;
    • Ability to administer and interpret a wide variety of psychometric instruments;
    • Ability to diagnose;
    • Good interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to lead and manage a team;
    • Good written and spoken skills;
    • Sensitivity to a diverse environment;
    • Planning, organising and prioritising skills;
    • Professionalism;
    • Ability to handle information with high confidentiality;
    • Ability to manage staff challenges;
    • Ability to work under pressure.
       

    Added Advantages And Preferences

    • PhD in Clinical or Counselling Psychology;
    • Accredited test user in diagnostic instruments;
    • Formal training in evidence based short term psychotherapy interventions;
    • Seven years’ experience as Clinical or Counselling Psychologist at a tertiary institution;
    • Seven years’ experience in supervising other psychologists;
    • Registered with the HPCSA as Clinical or Counselling Psychologist in independent practice.

    The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
