    Junior Lecturer M000075

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

    • Junior Lecturer employee is expected to contribute significantly to the teaching effort of a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Teaching undergraduate level in Operations Research and Statistics
    • Further own qualifications. Present research in academic spaces such as conferences and workshops.
    • Participate in community engagement activities.
    • Serve in professional bodies as a reviewer, editor, other committees etc.
    • Course development and curriculum.
    • Prepare and conduct student assessments allocated modules.
    • Administrative duties related to the department and school’s activities.

    Minimum requirements

    • An honours’ degree (NQF level 8) in Operations Research / Statistics.
    • A minimum of 1 year’ teaching and learning experience in tertiary institution or industry experience.

    RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • Membership with the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA) / South African Statistical Association (SASA).
    • A master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Operations Research / Statistics.
    • Conference proceedings and publication in an accredited journal.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Ability to teach a variety of Operations Research and Statistics modules.
    • Knowledge of Statistical methods and use of Statistical and Operations Research software.
    • Research outputs
    • Ability to conduct basic and applied research in the field of Operations Research and Statistics.
    • Assume administration responsibilities in their department.
    • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Communication skills/lecturing and people management skills.
    • Interpersonal skills and mentoring skills.
    • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team.
    • Good time management and ability to work well under pressure.
    • Effective communication skills.
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
