    Junior Preparatory Deputy Head

    ROLE SUMMARY:

    • To adopt a holistic view to students in their care, promoting the general progress and well-being of individuals and of any class or group assigned to them. To create a positive learning environment and motivate students to achieve their full potential.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Lead the quality of teaching, learning and pastoral care across the Junior Prep phase.
    • Coach, mentor and develop staff; facilitate targeted CPD aligned to improvement priorities.
    • Oversee curriculum planning, assessment cycles, moderation and statutory/reporting timelines.
    • Use attainment/progress data to drive intervention, enrichment and continuous improvement.
    • Model high-impact classroom practice and a calm, consistent behaviour culture.
    • Strengthen parent partnership through timely, transparent communication (meetings, reports, updates).
    • Manage phase operations (timetables, cover/locum coordination, routines, compliance and safeguarding).
    • Coordinate/co-lead co-curricular programmes and key JP events.
    • Support recruitment/induction and performance development; deputise for senior leaders when needed.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

    • SACE registration (essential).
    • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., B.Ed/PGCE); formal leadership training/qualification advantageous.
    • Minimum 5 years’ successful teaching experience, plus minimum 2 years in a formal leadership role (e.g., grade/phase head, subject lead).
    • Deep curriculum and assessment literacy; confident with data-informed decision-making.
    • Experience with IEB or international curricula (advantageous).
    • Outstanding communication, organisation and stakeholder management (staff and parents).
    • Solutions-focused, resilient, values-driven; unwavering commitment to safeguarding.
    • Appropriate right to work in South Africa.
