    Short Description / Purpose of Job

    The purpose of the role as design engineer is to be able to perform actual mechanical design activities and review and verify other's designs in any or all of the specialized fields of:

    • heat exchanger design and fabrication
    • pressure vessel design and fabrication
    • storage tank design and fabrication
    • piping systems design and fabrication

    The role shall be able to manage / execute the design, engineering, development and modification of complex and / or specialised pressure equipment in accordance with established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements.

    Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

    • Utilising authoritative level of experience in Mechanical engineering to:
    • Manage / execute the design, engineering, development and modification of complex and / or specialised pressure equipment in accordance with  established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements. Manage / guide apprentice engineer, providing technical direction to several smaller projects.

    Experience in Mechanical engineering:

    • Broad base of pressure equipment knowledge and competence in particular relating to the mechanical design
    • Knowledge in define fields of mechanical engineering (e.g. pressure vessel design, selection of equipment and materials for use  in process plants, Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) requirements, fabrication and construction of equipment, design of heat exchanger, International Health and Safety Standards and Codes, etc.)
    • Ability to formulate and execute (manage and do) the mechanical engineering scope for projects dealing with the procurement of pressure equipment.
    • Aware of best practices and able to ensure/maintain compliance in own area:
    • Utilise mechanical engineering systems, tools and standards (own, local and international) in own work and projects.
    • Create, develop and update of mechanical engineering systems, tools, specifications and standards.
    • Evaluate current mechanical engineering systems, identify weaknesses and provide corrective actions.
    • Lead and motivate team members in order to achieve positive outcomes.
    • Entrench an Aspirational Leadership culture within the team as well as in engagements with third parties.
    • Actively practise of interpersonal skills required for productive working relationships and to work with, or through, others (Engineering Contractors, Construction Contractors etc) inside and/or outside (including suppliers/fabricators) the organisation to execute projects and/or supply of equipment.  
    • Critical to this role are influencing, negotiating, maturity and emotional intelligence. Operate successfully in a diverse (culture, roles, positions and levels, etc.) work environment

    Qualifications

    • University Bachelor's Degree - Mechancial Engineer

    Min Experience

    • 6+ relevant years
    • Experience in the design, fabrication and maintenance of pressure equipment.
    • Experience in the thermal design / rating of heat exchangers, including detail knowledge of software used to perform these tasks.
    • Experience in the mechanical design, engineering, development and modification of pressure equipment and piping
    • Knowledge of Codes and Standards used in Petrochemical / Chemical Industries (ASME, ASTM, API, PD 5500, AD 2000, EN, etc.);
    • Knowledge of the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), Pressure Equipment Regulation (PER), SANS 347 and its implication to procurement, modification and repair of pressure equipment.

    Certification & Professional Membership

    •  Registered, or in the process of registering, as a Professional Engineer at ECSA.
