    About the role

    • The engineering foreman is responsible to ensure planning, coordinating, leading, and controlling of resources within the specific engineering section to ensure safe and optimum production through quality maintenance. The role holder will carry a legal appointment applicable to the role. Responsibilities include planning and organizing, cost controlling, leading, and supervising, performing inspections, and ensuring application of quality procedures and safety standards

    Key responsibilities

    • Ensure artisans conduct and coordinate regular safety meetings.
    • Ensure artisans conduct daily planned task observations (PTOs).
    • Ensure adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with organizational and legislation safety requirements by maintaining appropriate practices, standards, and procedures.
    • Ensure identifications and stopping of unsafe work practices.
    • Report any safety related issues.
    • Ensure good safety performance.
    • Ensure all legal appointments are in place.
    • Assist the engineer/superintendent/manager with capital and budget utilization.
    • Ensure assignment of resources to tasks.
    • Ensure proper labour utilization.
    • Ensure compliance with works orders.
    • Attend production, engineering, budget, and project planning meetings.
    • Comply with scheduled and planned tasks.
    • Work permits must be duly completed to expedite commencement of work
    • Ensure achievement of production targets through planning, leading, organizing, and controlling tasks.
    • Prioritize tasks and functions.
    • Coordinate delegation and allocation of tasks to team.
    • Coordinate/ensure performance of sectional visits and maintenance observations.
    • Coordinate performance of critical task analysis.
    • Ensure tasks are followed up and ensure compliance with deadlines.
    • Coordinate completion of job cards.
    • Address identified faults.
    • Report on daily section performance.
    • Conduct section inspections – do inspections to identify deficiencies and non-compliances.
    • Address maintenance, inspections and breakdowns reported.
    • Coordinate, oversee, supervise, and control all tasks and functions performed by artisans and their team members.
    • Minimize plant/equipment downtime.
    • Investigate and troubleshoot maintenance problems. Implement fault finding routines and procedures, diagnose the problems, and take appropriate actions
    • Coordinate ordering of materials and equipment.
    • Ensure that materials and equipment are used for the purpose designed for.
    • Ensure all equipment and maintenance files are accurately recorded.
    • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and to reduce costs and implement actions accordingly.
    • Oversee logbooks on a weekly basis.
    • Provide daily feedback to engineer/superintendent/manager.
    • Report all defects and equipment risks.
    • Record accurate statistics and reports on equipment.
    • Ensure accurate diagnosis, analysis, and trending.
    • Ensure accurate data monitoring and that trend files are well recorded
    • Supervise the team and their performance (including provision of training where required).
    • Ensure effective discipline and compliance with the disciplinary code.
    • Monitor clocking and ensure relevant payroll matters are handled.
    • Handle the team’s queries.
    • Ensure the team has clear expectations and schedules to work according to.
    • Build competencies through support, on-the-job coaching and participation in training and development initiatives.
    • Perform all duties instructed/required by supervisor/manager which might not be related to job functions – provided that it is safe to do so.
    • Adhere to health, safety, and security regulations.
    • Ensure that good housekeeping is maintained

    Minimum requirement

    • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical engineering.
    • A Millwright qualification will be considered if the applicant has at least 5 years’ experience in an engineering environment.
    • Valid driver’s license and own transport.
    • Computer literacy (MS Office Suite).
    • Supervisory/leadership training
