    Multimedia Designer (P10) (Academic Development & Support Division: Centre for Academic Technologies) (Re-advert)

    •  The Division of Academic Development and Support (ADS) comprises multiple initiatives dedicated to providing the best possible academic experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students in South Africa, thereby maximising retention, success and throughput.     • The purpose of this role is to conceptualise, design and produce high‑quality multimedia learning and communication assets (graphics, video, audio, animations and interactive media) that support technology‑enhanced teaching, learning and academic support initiatives, in alignment with UJ, UJ digital and CAT branding, accessibility and quality standards

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop concepts, storyboards and visual treatments for digital learning resources, campaigns and projects in collaboration with Learning Experience Advisors and project leads;
    • Design and produce graphics, layouts, templates and visual identities for modules, courses and projects, aligned with UJ CI and accessibility guidelines;
    • Create and edit short‑form and long‑form video, screen recordings, animations and motion graphics for teaching, learning and staff development.
    • Design and produce visual and multimedia content (banners, videos, social media tiles, digital posters) for CAT‑related related internal marketing and communication campaigns, aligned with UJ corporate identity and messaging guidelines.
    • Design and produce visual and multimedia content (banners, videos, social media tiles, digital posters) for UJ Digital related external marketing and communication campaigns, aligned with UJ corporate identity and messaging guidelines.
    • Design and package interactive multimedia objects for use in the LMS and other platforms such as UJ Digital (e.g. image sets, infographics, quizzes, simple animations).
    • Optimise media (file formats, compression, resolutions, captions) for online and mobile delivery.
    • Support adaptation of existing materials into more engaging multimedia formats where pedagogically appropriate.
    • Work as part of CAT and UJ Digital project teams to scope multimedia requirements, timelines and deliverables; engage with academics and internal clients to clarify briefs, manage expectations and provide creative guidance; provide basic training and resources (guides, presets, templates) to staff and tutors for simple self‑service multimedia creation; provide first‑line troubleshooting on produced media assets.
    • Work with the UJ Digital team to support marketing initiatives to support faculty marketing drives and campaigns.

    Minimum requirements

    • A relevant NQF Level 6 qualification (Diploma) in Multimedia Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Media or a closely related field
    • At least 3 to 5 years’ experience in multimedia and/or graphic design, preferably in an educational, corporate learning or digital communication environment
    • Demonstrable proficiency in industry‑standard design and multimedia software (for example, Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent tools for image editing, layout, video and basic motion graphics).
    • Working knowledge of designing for web and mobile (formats, resolutions, optimisation, aspect ratios).
    • Basic understanding of technology‑enhanced learning environments and the use of digital media to support teaching, learning and academic support.

    Recommendations:

    • Experience producing multimedia assets for an LMS (e.g. Moodle) or similar platforms.
    • Familiarity with UJ or higher education branding, communication and accessibility requirements.
    • Experience with screen‑capture, simple animation, motion graphics and/or interactive content tools.
    • Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary team (instructional design, systems, helpdesk, marketing/communications).

    Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

    • Strong visual design skills, with an eye for layout, typography, colour and composition.
    • Ability to translate complex or abstract academic content into clear, engaging visual and multimedia formats
    • Excellent planning and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
    • Ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
    • Good writing and communication skills for briefing, feedback and collaboration with academic staff and colleagues.
    • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and ownership of deliverables.
    • Strong attention to detail, quality orientation and commitment to consistency and brand compliance.
    • High levels of integrity, sound judgement, professionalism and interpersonal skills
