    Network System Engineer - Randburg

    The Role: Network Systems Engineer
    Department: Headend Managed Services

    The Managed Services team in Randburg is responsible for the design, commissioning, system integration, system testing, monitoring and operation of the various broadcast and headend components that allow MultiChoice to offer its services to consumers. To that end we're looking to hire for the role of Network Systems Engineer, based at the MultiChoice offices in Randburg.

    Network Systems Engineer

    • As the Network Systems Engineer, you will own and drive the systems supporting the network and related connectivity and availability. You will work closely with team members and customers to provide the best, technically sound experience.
    • This role translates business requirements into technical solutions and supports the broadcast platform and headend managed services teams. In this 24x7 operational role, standby duties are performed with some travel as required.
    • You are expected to understand applications and infrastructure to be able to interact with vendors, partners and stakeholders to provide cost-effective solutions.
    • The successful candidate has strong technical capabilities, will thrive in a fast-paced high energy environment, is proactive and passionate about delivering world-class deployment and support services to customers; and will work closely with Irdeto Service delivery teams and other key stakeholders within Irdeto, our partners and customers and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.

    What you will be working on:

    • Maximising service availability through proactive monitoring – with such a complex network of equipment, many different monitoring systems are in use and it is your responsibility to ensure that the right eyes are always on the right systems to ensure an absolute minimum MTTA (mean-time-to-acknowledge) and MTTR (mean-time-to-repair).
    • Maximising service availability through preventative maintenance – systems fail, for whatever reason, and it is your responsibility to ensure that those under your control fail safely when they do, and are optimised through daily/weekly/monthly maintenance to fail as little as possible to ensure a maximum MTBF (mean-time-between-failure).
    • Participate in the incident management process and drive the root-cause-analysis procedure for any major incidents that you attend to, to ensure that the stability and recovery procedures on the network are always improving.
    • Provide technical, operational support to stakeholders of the systems under your control.
    • Project deployment: design and implement/commission solutions to expand or optimise the headend network capabilities
    • Governance and Documentation: in a complex environment, change management and knowledge management are key. To that end, you will be involved in:
    • SOP writing, review and updates
    • Logging and communication of changes
    • Logging and communication of 3rd party changes
    • Document writing for manuals, installations, wiring diagrams and cutting sheets
    • Maintaining asset register
    • Maintaining system patch levels

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Reporting – network incidents and availability
    • System Administration – configuration and maintenance of monitoring applications,
    • Software deployment – installation, configuration
    • Server Administration – Microsoft Server, SQL and Linux
    • Media Services Platforms – configuration and support of content delivery systems using industry standards – RTP, SRT, RIST, Zixi
    • Nimbra network management and support – MSR, VA platforms
    • Vulnerability reporting and patch management of systems/hosts
    • Primary/L1 network support
    • Network scanning, monitoring, and reporting
    • Project implementation and support
    • Ongoing training and development

    Knowledge and Skills, we hope you bring:

    • Bachelor of Technology in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, or National Diploma in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
    • Cisco Certified Network Administrator/CompTIA Network+
    • 3-5 years’ experience in technical systems support
    • 2+ years’ experience in managing and supporting NetInsight Nimbra networks is an advantage
    • Experience in Antivirus, Vulnerability and Malware management: Symantec, TrendMicro, Nessus
    • Experience in working with highly collaborative teams with service interdependencies
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain professional internal and external relationships that meet Irdeto’s core values.
    • Pay-TV/Broadcast Industry Technologies knowledge – SDi, MPEG, SMPTE – an advantage
    • Knowledge of IP networks (Switching, Routing and multicasting) and related security
    • Knowledge of LAN and WAN technologies
    • Experience in troubleshooting and diagnosis of network issues
    • Knowledge of VSAT and Telemetry systems an advantage
    • Experience in audio/video transport technologies
    • Competent user of the Microsoft suite of Office applications including Excel, Word and PowerPoint to generate documentation and proposals/presentations

    Attitude Requirements:

    • Must be a fast learner. Be able to come up to speed on new applications and technology in a very short amount of time.
    • Must be detail-oriented, with strong analytical and problem solving skills.
    • High degree of self-motivation. Must be able to plan and execute work both independently and as a team member.
    • Ability to function effectively in a multi-cultural team environment
