    Packaging Development Manager

    Job purpose

    • To provide a complete packaging development service to AmSSA Region from providing conceptual printing solutions, developing printing files and tooling’s with supplier, to approve the print finishing appearance standard which meets approved specifications.
    • To develop, specify and overall manage all kind of Packaging Development requirements across announced brand and Area responsibilities, using appropriate processes, systems, methods, technologies and supply sources.
    • To maintain the visual consistency of International Brands and Regional Brands against approved master standards.
    • To support at all times BAT’s global packaging strategy and best practice to ensure the development of optimum quality packaging materials with maximum speed to market with effective cost management.
    • To be the established technical expert on printing specifics for our internal and external stakeholders.
       

    Key deliverables

    • To ensure new packaging developments are delivered on time, in full, according project budget and compliant based on standard BAT process requirements, quality and brand standards.
    • Develop, obtain digital approvals and specify the required packaging materials by using appropriate process, BAT’s systems, methods, technologies and supply sources.
    • Provide technical input and recommendations on all packaging related matters to stakeholders.
    • To liaise with project initiators e.g. NPI, Marketing, Operations, CORA to scope any new packaging development project, and provide relevant information to project stakeholders.
    • Artwork agencies for the creation and release of packaging artworks and health warning templates
    • Repro house and printers to supply artwork, health warning template, colour, embossing & material specifications for printing
    • Manage all approval processes related to printed materials (files and final materials) as internally specified
    • Supply Chain to participate in cost and complexity reduction activities
    • Provide a region-wide service, and therefore a willingness to travel to Operating Companies and suppliers throughout AmSSA. Recognise the round the clock nature of the printing and packaging industry, and be available when necessary to attend print runs outside office hours and approve printing appearance standards for the new packaging materials.
    • Provide master appearance standards to printer and relevant departments in Operations after acceptance of first printed run to ensure future uniformity.
    • Engage regularly with BAT’s external suppliers/partners in sharing the way of working, news on materials, printing technologies, and new finishing technologies.
       

    Essential Experience

    • Matric, with 5 at least years experience in the Printing and Packaging Industry
    • A degree or an equivalent level qualification or significant relevant professional experience
       

    Desired Experience

    • Experience in Tobacco Packaging and/or printing industry and a solid background in Artwork and repro system
       

    Skills & Experience

    • Printing materials and processes
    • Artwork creation & repro processes
    • Computer literacy and Illustrator skills
    • The jobholder should possess good inter-personal, client relations and resource management skills.
    • The jobholder should have a good spoken and written language skills (English minimum), and be able to give presentations on various subjects, technical or otherwise, to all levels of personnel.
       

    Further Required Key Skills

    • Attention to detail & extreme accuracy
    • Ability to manage various projects in parallel
    • Knowledge of printing technology and experience in colour management and press approvals
    • Willingness to travel extensively when required
    • Willingness to approve designs on printing machines after hours due to set-up costs
