    PGCE Assessor – Teaching Practice Faculty of Education

    Job Description

    • This is a remote position.
    • Lyceum College invites applications from qualified, committed, and academically rigorous professionals to serve as PGCE Assessors for Teaching Practice within the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualification in the Faculty of Education.
    • PGCE Teaching Practice Assessors play a vital role in ensuring the academic quality, fairness, and integrity of student assessment within school-based teaching practice.
    • Successful applicants will contribute to the assessment of teaching practice evidence aligned with South African higher education standards and institutional quality assurance requirements.

    Specialisation Area

    • ​The Faculty of Education is seeking PGCE Assessors for the following Teaching Practice areas:
    • Teaching Practice and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL)
    • Teaching Practice Portfolios and Reflective Practice
    • School-Based Practicum Assessment

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assess Teaching Practice portfolios, reports, lesson plans, reflective activities, and supporting evidence for academic quality and alignment with programme outcomes.
    • Ensure assessments align with institutional standards, curriculum requirements, approved assessment criteria, and NQF expectations.
    • Evaluate student submissions to ensure assessment decisions are valid, reliable, fair, consistent, and academically rigorous.
    • Provide constructive academic feedback to students in accordance with approved rubrics and assessment guidelines.
    • Ensure that Teaching Practice evidence demonstrates appropriate application of pedagogical knowledge in school-based learning environments.
    • Verify academic coherence, reflective practice, lesson planning, and appropriate pedagogical approaches in submitted evidence.
    • Collaborate with programme coordinators and academic teams during the Teaching Practice assessment process.
    • Ensure compliance with quality assurance, academic integrity, and regulatory requirements.
    • Meet assessment deadlines and complete any required revisions or reassessments where applicable.

    Requirements

    Required Competencies

    Applicants must demonstrate:

    • Strong subject knowledge in teacher education, Teaching Practice, and appropriate pedagogical methodologies.
    • Excellent academic assessment, writing, reviewing, and feedback skills.
    • Understanding of curriculum, assessment practices, and Work-Integrated Learning in higher education.
    • Knowledge of South African education contexts and school-based teaching practice frameworks.
    • Strong attention to detail and quality assurance principles.
    • Ability to work independently and meet strict assessment deadlines.
    • Good communication and collaboration skills.
    • Proficiency in digital platforms and online learning environments.

    Minimum Requirements

    • A master’s degree in Education, Teacher Education, Curriculum Studies, or a related specialisation (essential).
    • At least two years’ experience in higher education, teacher education, Teaching Practice, assessment, curriculum design, or academic reviewing.
    • Demonstrable experience assessing, marking, moderating, or reviewing academic work or Teaching Practice evidence.
    • Experience in distance or online education will serve as an advantage.
    • Familiarity with South African higher education quality assurance frameworks.
    • Computer literacy with access to a reliable internet connection and laptop/desktop.

    Added Advantage

    • ​A Doctorate in the relevant field or progress towards one.
    • Experience within private higher education institutions.
    • Previous experience in distance learning institutions or Teaching Practice assessment.
