    Research Assistant

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Providing research assistance for various projects in a flexible and proactive manner congruent with specimen collection times in clinics;
    • Performing sample logging, processing, extraction and storage of specimens and their derivatives. This may require working in a Biosafety Level 3 facility, for which training is provided;
    • Maintaining REDCap databases related to the research studies, including QC, updating records, and requesting modifications to databases;
    • Providing assistance with admin-based duties, such as ordering, preparing sample packs, etc.;
    • Writing and updating standard operating procedures;
    • Managing orders for equipment and reagents;
    • Contributing to the overall activities of the research team and Division as required, including ordering and performing financial and general laboratory administration;
    • Biobanking of specimens at -80C, -20C as well as in the BIOS (automated biorepository facility). Being responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order;
    • Paying periodic, semi-regular visits to our mobile laboratory and recruitment sites within Cape Town.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • At least an Honour's degree in molecular biology, human genetics, or equivalent in a related field;
    • A strong background in life sciences/laboratory techniques which could include nucleic acids extraction and measurement;
    • The ability to work independently as well as within a project team environment;
    • The ability to openly, clearly and rapidly communicate in English openly, clearly, both verbally and in writing;
    • The ability to work flexi working hours for the standard eight-hour working day to ensure that the specimens that were received can be processed without delay.
    • This will not be necessary  every day, but the incumbent will be required to potentially do this for two to three days per week.

    Shortlisted candidates may need to undergo practical training.
    Recommendation/Aanbeveling        

    • Good interpersonal, communication, and computer skills;
    • The ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary research group under pressure;
    • Good Clinical/Laboratory Practice training will be advantageous but is not mandatory;
    • Sample processing for TB background;
    • BSL2/3 experience;
    • Preferably have own transport;
