    Scanning Manager - Palaeontology

    Department Description        

    • The Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI) in the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, seeks to recruit a Scanning Manager to operate the micro-CT Scanner, train postgraduate students and develop a business plan. An interest in conducting his/her own research is optional. This is a five-year contract that potentially is renewable.

    Brief Description        
    Requirements:

    •     An MSc in Physics, Palaeontology, Geology, Archaeology or related field.
    •     Proven experience (minimum two years) in operating a CT scanner or similar for research and commercial applications.
    •     Advanced computer and software skills: Avizo, VG Studio Max, Agisoft, Drishti, Amira, or other relevant software.
    •     Working knowledge of database science and relevant programmes
    •     Bona fide experience collecting and interpreting primary CT data.
    •     Proven ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
    •     Experience in postgraduate student mentorship would be an advantage.
    •     Proven ability to operate, maintain and train others in the application and use of this research equipment.

    Responsibilities

    •     Operate and maintain the Nikon Micro-CT scanner and associated computers, software, data storage and efficient retrieval.
    •     Develop a business plan for the operation and sustainability of the scanner.
    •     Provide technical support to the ESI and students from the relevant Faculties of the University, and internal and external users of the facility.
    •     Conduct interdisciplinary research in CT scanning, the use of CT scans and manipulating CT data would be an advantage.
    •     Assist or co-supervise postgraduate research students.
    •     Ability to work late hours, including weekends, and meet stringent deadlines.
