Senior Director: Distribution at Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

Qualifications and experience required:

• B.Sc. degree (Electrical Engineering).
• Registered as a Professional Engineer.
• Government Certificate of Competency (Electrical).
• Eight (8) years’ relevant experience.

Key attributes and competencies:

• Performs management functions associated with the utilisation, productivity, and performance of personnel within Distribution, preparation of the capital and operational budget, financial control, and formulation of contracts.
• Participates in and makes strategic decisions regarding the formulation, implementation, and management of overhead line distribution systems.
• Participates in and makes strategic decisions regarding the formulation, implementation, and management of underground cable distribution systems.
• Participates in and makes strategic decisions regarding the formulation, implementation, and management of substation installations and maintenance.
• Participates in and makes strategic decisions regarding the formulation, implementation, and management of street and high mast lighting systems.
• Initiates and conceptualises strategic short-, medium- and long-term objectives and plans regarding the reliability of the distribution and transmission network.
• Reports, interacts, and communicates internally and externally.
• Must be physically fit and healthy and able to perform manual operations and duties on foot – needs to carry out on-site inspections.
• Ability to cope with mental stress associated with the taking of risky decisions and giving instructions under any emergency conditions, authorising switching on the distribution and transmission network, maintenance planning, maintaining safety of operations, etc.  This stress is a constant part of the job.
• Ability to meet frequent pre-undetermined and conflicting deadlines and interruptions in the job – Council and Committee meetings, management meetings, public meetings, reporting requirements, emergency situations due to system failures, etc.
• Sight, speech and hearing ability. 

Special conditions attached to the post:

• A valid Code EB driver’s licence.

Job purpose:

• Providing strategic leadership and managing the Distribution Branch regarding maintenance and construction work on the transmission and distribution network, adherence to legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, operations on the distribution network and the security thereof by formulating initiating, co-ordinating, implementing, maintaining, and managing a shared strategic operational plan between the various depots.
