Mechanical engineer with extensive package experience, as well as being well versed with rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, engines, etc.) and piping, static (PER) equipment.
Participate in EPCM/EPC execution projects, studies (from concept to detail) and tenders, and ensuring work standards are met.
Responsible for the hands-on engineering and approval of rotating equipment and packaged units on assigned projects.
Responsible for preparation and approval of project related standards and job notes.
Ensure that engineering activities on assigned projects are executed within budgeted manhours and approved schedules in compliance with project procedures, standards and specifications and in accordance with company procedures and the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of South Africa.
Review and approve project schedules with the Project Engineer and/or the Project Planner to see that all dates, rates of progress and design periods are realistic.
Review and approve flowsheets for correctness of depicting of rotating equipment and packaged units, operating and design conditions and piping and instrumentation connections.
Develop equipment specifications to meet the client’s standards, international and South African standards and regulatory requirements.
Prepare technical bid analysis and evaluation reports for rotating equipment and packaged units.
Review and approve supplier documents for rotating equipment, mechanical handling and packaged units and distribute.
Responsible for overall technical management/co-ordination on supplier orders for rotating equipment, mechanical handling and packaged units. This includes technical management/co-ordination with other engineering disciplines.
Give guidance to client, project engineers, other specialist engineers and inspectors on rotating equipment, mechanical handling and packaged units engineering matters. Coordinate review of all other engineering aspects of package unit supplier’s drawings.
Perform inspection and witness performance testing where required.
Provide progress report information, at the required frequency and with the required content, to the Project Engineer/ Project Manager throughout the project execution.
Assist where necessary, in the construction, handover and commissioning of rotating equipment, mechanical handling and packaged units.
Preparation, coordination and reviewing of key mechanical deliverables, including mechanical packages, datasheets, specifications, bills of quantity, mechanical design basis reports, costing and trade off analysis, equipment lists, etc.
Coordination and reviewing of digital / drawing-based deliverables, including 3D models, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, etc.
Experience with key mechanical software, such as hydraulic analysis packages (e.g. PipeFlo, Bentley Hammer) is an advantage
Developing and critiquing existing designs and vendor systems. Gap analysis of pre-existing project information.
Client and stakeholder interaction. Communication and presentation skills. Presenting of technical methodologies and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Minimum requirements
BEng, BSc, MEng, or MSc in Mechanical Engineering and 10 to 15 years’ experience with a minimum of 5 years in the petrochemical industry.
Pr.Eng. registration with ECSA.
Familiar with commonly used mechanical engineering standards and codes including but not limited to API, NFPA, ASME, GPS as well as commonly used mechanical engineering software.
Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word).
Working knowledge of mechanical software packages is expected – e.g. Ceasar, CAD, 3D & 4D modelling, FEA, Compress, Codecalc, PV Elite, OptiVessel, NozzlePro, PRCI, Mathcad, Solid Edge
Working knowledge of process software would be a positive - Aspen Plus, Aspen Hysys, Pro II and other Simulation Software (Flownex).
Prior experience in the petrochemical industry, with some additional experience in gas (LNG/CNG/LPG), fire systems, manufacturing & resources would be a bonus.
Experience distinguishing advantages and/or vulnerabilities among licensors’ competitive technologies in the petrochemical sectors.
Knowledge of mechanical engineering guidelines and standards.
Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams to achieve project results within required timeframes.
