Senior Specialist: Software Engineer at Vodafone Global Enterprise

Role Purpose/Business Unit:

• The Senior Specialist: Software Engineer designs, builds and operates high scale CVM & AI services that drive customer value and revenue. The role spans solution design, coding, test automation, and operational support across iterative Agile cycles, with strong alignment to Digital Engineering standards (e.g., TMF compliant APIs and GraphQL patterns) and the CVM & AI ways of working (Feature Statements, QA enablement, and release governance). The engineer collaborates closely with product, architecture, QA, platform and operations to achieve speed, quality, reliability and cost efficiency (FinOps).
• This role requires strong engineering fundamentals, hands‑on development capability, and consistent collaboration with architects, other developers, QA, DevOps, and domain leads.
• The role requires in-depth knowledge of mobile software architectures, languages, and frameworks, as well as web platform technologies.  The role will be directly responsible for compliance with strategies, architectures, and frameworks in managing the development, performance, and stability of applications using agile delivery, deployed and DevSecOps methodologies.

Your responsibilities will include:

• End to end engineering delivery (Agile WoW): Estimate and refine technical stories, design modular solutions, implement code, and progress features through build, test, and release in line with the revised Feature Statement (FS) process and CVM & AI delivery guardrails.
• Design and Develop
• High-level technical strategy and architecture for backend, web and mobile. 
• Integrity, stability, performance, and scalability of the backend, web and mobile.
• API & integration excellence: Build TMF‑aligned REST/GraphQL services and integrations that are secure, performant, observable, and reusable across channels; contribute to the Apollo /
• GraphOS rollout and subgraph patterns where applicable. 
• Quality engineering & automation: Drive unit/integration/UI test automation and shift‑left quality; partner with QA Enablement to improve test coverage, defect escape rate and release confidence across CVM & AI services.
• Operability & reliability: Instrument services with logs/metrics/traces, adopt event‑streaming and Always‑On patterns, and participate in L2/L3 incident/problem management to reduce MTTR and increase availability.
• Platform & DevOps collaboration: Contribute to developer tooling standards, CI/CD and platform enablement; champion engineering guardrails and inner‑source contributions across squads.
• Engage with technology partners, cross-functional IT groups, and the Business to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of development and support activities 
• Work closely with the Business and IT teams to understand business strategy and contribute to the achievement of strategic goals 
• Provide oversight to investigation, analysis, and management of technology risks, issues, and dependencies in all programs/projects 
• Provide oversight and standards for CI/CD pipelines, relevant documentation, and agile practices. 
• Conduct periodic reviews with the team to enhance SLAs by proposing improved controls and metrics and general improvement plans.
• Automate controls and metrics to groups 
• Participate in detailed-level technical solution definition and design to achieve stable mobile and web applications  
• Improve architectural principles & align to strategy 
• Encourage best practice and knowledge sharing with partners and cross-functional

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

• 3 years National Diploma or Bachelor’s in IT diploma or relevant field 
• Matric/Grade 12 (essential) and a 3‑Year Degree/Diploma in Computer Science/Engineering or related (essential).
• 5+ years in software engineering building production services at scale, preferably in telecommunications or large enterprise digital.
• Demonstrated experience with API engineering (REST/GraphQL), test automation, CI/CD and observability; exposure to TMF patterns and GraphQL/Apollo is advantageous.
• Experience with event streaming (Kafka) and Always‑On patterns for CVM is highly valued.
• Cloud proficiency (AWS services and container orchestration) and collaboration with platform/FinOps teams supporting Digital Engineering workloads.

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

• Software engineering mastery: Strong design and coding in one or more of backend or full‑stack stacks; expert knowledge of modularization, API design, data modelling and secure coding.
• Distributed systems & eventing: Experience building event‑driven and near‑real‑time services for CVM use cases; familiarity with Always‑On event streaming patterns (e.g., Kafka).
• API/Schema standards: Hands‑on with REST/GraphQL, schema governance and TMF alignment; understanding of Apollo/GraphOS and subgraph design.
• Quality & reliability engineering: Test automation, CI/CD discipline, observability and operational readiness (runbooks, SLOs, error budgets) integrated into the delivery lifecycle.
• Cloud & platform fluency: Practical experience with AWS/GCP/OpenShift environments used by Digital Engineering (incl. non‑production estates), containers and infrastructure automation; proven collaboration with platform enablement/FinOps.
• Proficient in containerization technologies, including Docker, and container orchestration using Kubernetes or OpenShift. 
• Demonstrated expertise in designing and developing scalable, secure, and high-performing.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, including design, implementation, and optimization for automated build, test, and deployment processes.
