    Site Manager

    (Two-year contract with option of benefits)

    The paediatric TB research group at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) is situated in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Child Health of Stellenbosch University. We need a committed professional nurse to assist in clinical research projects that address TB in children.
    The appointment will be made on a two-year temporary contract, with the possibility of further extension subject to the availability of research funding and the incumbent's sustained performance. 
    Remuneration will be calculated on a standard scale, but will also depend on the incumbent's qualifications, experience and output. The incumbent will be trained in the specific skills required to support the research project.


    Duties        

    • Helping to manage the implementation of the trial(s);
    • Performing clinical assessments (e.g. weighing, measuring, and checking vital signs);
    • Assisting with the clinical evaluation of participants (can be adults or children);
    • Taking blood samples (including from infants and children); 
    • Inserting intravenous cannulas (as required);
    • Performing TB diagnostic procedures, e.g. by obtaining sputum samples and gastric aspirates;
    • Preparing all samples, including gastric aspirates for transport to the laboratory;
    • Completing data collection forms, including questionnaires;
    • Managing patient records: maintaining and filing records according to visits (including blood results);
    • Recording essential data on the relevant forms meticulously and on time;
    • Maintaining patient confidentiality;
    • Maintaining clear communication channels with the study team and routine clinic staff;
    • Managing a team of study staff, as well as the daily logistics of a busy clinical trial site.

    Job Requirements    

    • A nursing qualification and registration with the South African Nursing Council;
    • At least two years' clinical paediatric or equivalent research experience, including performing phlebotomies;
    • Experience in leading and managing a research team;
    • The ability to solve problems independently and effectively;
    • Fluency in writing, reading and speaking English;
    • A valid driver's licence;
    • The ability to work with young children and babies;
    • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team;
    • A punctual, well organised and responsible work ethic;
    • Basic computer literacy;
    • The willingness to work in townships should the project require it;
    • The willingness and availability to work flexible work hours should the project require it.

    Recommendation        

    • GCP training and certification;
    • Proficiency in isiXhosa or Afrikaans (or both).
