This position reports to the Engineering Director 

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager who is a self-starter and is comfortable taking ownership of assigned projects while working collaboratively in a team environment. The Engineering Manager will need to work with colleagues at all levels of the organisation. Superbalist.com is a rapidly expanding company and we are interested in candidates who are innovative and driven to make a positive impact to the team.

The high level

• The supervision of a team of system engineering staff in order to plan, estimate and carry out programmes of systems engineering work to time, budget and quality targets and in accordance with appropriate standards.
• Plans, organises and controls activities of the team’s engineers in the development of computer-based systems.
• Works closely with the product team to ensure that roadmaps for the team are well-defined, appropriate, and executed upon.
• Assigns personnel to projects, directs their activities and co-ordinates the work of team leaders. In particular, ensures technical and functional standards are observed and prepares staffing and hardware/software budgets.
• Manages the balance between new work streams and supporting existing systems.

Your qualifications & experience

• Degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent experience
• Experience leading a team technically, with a focus on a very high-quality output
• Experience mentoring and developing technical teams
• Experience working within an Agile team, and being an advocate of that culture
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Experience developing PHP and/or Python in a test-driven environment (with a working knowledge of node.js advantageous)
• Experience supporting existing systems (both personally, and through a team)
• Experience managing, triaging, and prioritizing operational workloads while keeping new work throughput predictable
• Significant technical experience and a proven track record of architectural ownership and understanding
• A thorough understanding of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms 
• Experience in developing distributed, high transactional, and available systems
• Experience mentoring and developing others' technically

The skills we need

• Experience with and an understanding of line management responsibility for a technical team
• A thorough understanding of software engineering practices and best practices, including Agile software development, source code control systems, and the use of software IDEs and development and testing tools.
• Experience leading technical teams with operational responsibilities
• An understanding of software deployment tools, deployment processes, and best practices
• Experience working with unit test frameworks
• Experience with network requests to RESTful APIs using best practices and well-known libraries
