RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Obtain the prescribed submitted sample according to the ISTA Rules.
• Obtain a working sample from the submitted sample using a method prescribed in the ISTA Rules.
• Do a defect determination.
• Do Kernel count when requested.
• Weigh fractions separately and report
• Sampling of seed lots according to ISTA Rules.
• Obtain the prescribed submitted sample according to the ISTA Rules.
• Obtain the prescribed working sample, from the submitted sample, according to the ISTA Rules.
• Do a defect determination and purity analysis
• Choose the planting method according to the ISTA Rules for the specific species, taking into consideration the current temperature settings of the incubators.
• In the event that a germination test is not satisfactory an alternative method can be used in consultation with the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor, making it possible to determine the difference in germination in various media.
• Daily temperature readings need to be made on all apparatus, store room and laboratory; problems need to be reported to laboratory superiors.
• Ensure that the laboratory and all equipment belonging to the laboratory are at all times kept clean and in a good condition-report any malfunctions immediately.
• Use the methods as prescribed by laboratory superiors.
• Obtain a working sample using methods as prescribed by the ISTA Rules.
• Prepare the seed for pre-treatment according to the specified time.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

• Min:    Grade 12 with Biology, Science and Mathematics or applicable experience
• Ideal:  Post Matric qualification, eg. Agricultural Diploma

Legal Requirements:

Min:    Training to comply with DAFF’s OSTL registration

• Seed Science Course
• Exams in practical seed analysis at OSTL
• Sampling course (in-house)

Experience:

• 4 years experience in seed analysis
• Seed sampling theoretical training at SANSOR
• Must be a registered seed sampler at SANSOR
