Superintendent Safety at Gold Fields Limited

The Superintendent Safety is accountable for partnering with operational leadership and their teams to achieve the Safety strategic objectives of the business.  The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of a pro-active approach to all health and safety issues in the workplace.  In collaboration with management and operational teams, ensure compliance with prescribed regulations, operational standards and campaigns to ensure optimal and sustainable application of the safety management system.

Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 12/N3 qualification or equivalent
• Degree/National Diploma in Health and Safety Management
• At least 5 years’ appropriate trackless mining experience
• In-depth knowledge of knowledge of the Mine Health & Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)
• Valid driver’s license, Code 08 (EB)
• Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

• Working knowledge and application Safety management systems
• Expert knowledge and understanding of safety reporting standards and systems and the ability to conduct intermediate safety audit and assurance
• Have a good understanding of the ISO 45001:2018 Safety Management Standard
• In-depth knowledge of the Mine Health & Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)
• Computer literate and proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite
• Proven diagnostic and problem-solving skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Convene, lead and participate in various Safety meetings, forums and engagements to represent area of accountability and act as a conduit for escalation and/or onward cascading of key Safety management initiatives
• Provide people leadership within the department by managing workload, assigning tasks, and reviewing/recognising outputs and development of team members
• Participate in and lead the regular review and updating of the mine's Safety Management System and ensure sufficient structure is implemented to ensure application, compliance and quality
• Design, refine and recommend improvement to various H&S standards, systems, practices, methods and procedures and oversee the execution of approved changes
• Develop and oversee the delivery of a risk management schedule to ensure alignment with identified high risk areas,  progress against objectives and application of remedial/optimisation measures
• Participate in and lead investigations relating to serious incidents and accidents according to agreed investigation standards and methodologies (ICAM and RCAT)  and, including articulation of findings and recommendations
• Conduct, facilitate and/or participate in regular operational risk assessment exercises including the facilitation of bow-tie analysis, etc. and maintain appropriate risk management schedules against which to measure operational controls, mitigation measures, etc.
• Conduct scheduled and ad hoc safety inspections and compile safety, risk assessment and audit reports for presentation and/or submission to operational leadership and the Safety Department highlighting any areas of best practice application and/or concern.
• Participate in the development, planning and roll-out of various on-site safety initiatives, campaigns, safety topics. and monitor implementation in area of accountability taking remedial actions as required to maintain momentum
• Design, refine and collate various H&S reports, dashboards according to scheduled reporting drumbeat  (including statistics, progress, objectives, etc)
• Plan, organise, lead and communicate with all stakeholders - to ensure that  H&S targets / objectives are delivered and initiate remedial actions as appropriate
