    Technician

    Minimum requirements

    • A relevant 3-year qualification with a minimum of 360 credits (NQF Level 6)

    Key performance areas/Core functions:

    • Maintenance and development of all Civil Engineering practical laboratories.
    • Maintenance of all Civil Engineering laboratory equipment.
    • Involvement in practical and project work for Civil Engineering subjects.
    • Prepare and supervise experiments for practical work.
    • Assist academic staff members with practicals for Civil Engineering modules.
    • Maintain discipline and ensure compliance with procedures in the practical laboratories.
    • Instruct students on safety procedures.
    • Perform regular inspections and risk assessments.
    • Provision of general technical support to staff members.
    • Assist with general administrative duties.
    • Compile reports and other documents with programmes such as MS Word,
    • MS Excel and MS PowerPoint as required.
    • Control of assets: ensure that all equipment is treated with care and is not removed without proper authorization.
    • Budget and financial planning of laboratory fees and levies.
    • Involvement in procurement of consumables and purchasing of capital equipment required in the practical laboratories.
    • Work effectively as an individual and within diverse, multidisciplinary teams in various settings.
    • Communicate clearly and inclusively with academic, industry, and community stakeholders.
    • Support departmental community engagement initiatives and co-develop technical guides when required.
    • Assist instructional and research staff members with the implementation of Short Learning
    • Programmes (SLPs) in laboratories.
    • Perform additional tasks assigned with flexibility for changes in responsibilities.
    • Perform regular inspections and risk assessments.

    Experience:

    • 3 years relevant experience.

    Skills/Knowledge/Attributes:
    The following skills, knowledge, and attributes will be advantageous:

    • Familiarity with the Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) requirements, policies, and legislation.
    • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety standards.
    • Familiarity with relevant SANS codes and SABS standards applicable to Civil Engineering laboratory testing and procedures.
    • Understanding of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
    • Strong people skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
    • Critical thinking skills.
    • Desirable attributes: disciplined, dynamic, and goal oriented. Self-motivated, adaptable, and entrepreneurial. Customer-focused, accurate, and result-driven.

    Additional Information:

    • Registration with ECSA in the appropriate professional category will be an advantage.
    • Preference will be given to South African applicants
