    Tutor - FinTech

    What We’re Looking For:

    TLG is an acronym for Tutor, Learning Assistant, Grader. Each of the 3 component parts of the full-time TLG role have similarities and differences but the responsibilities of each component can be summarized collectively as student support. The full-time TLG may be thought of as a student support specialist who performs 3 different roles.

    Universities throughout the world partner with Trilogy Ed. (a 2U, Inc. brand) to provide boot camp programs in various disciplines such as web development, data science (data visualization), cyber security, UX/UI, and others. You may read about our programs here.

    As a student support specialist (TLG), your particular subject matter expertise will determine which program(s) you would support  across our university partners.  If your expertise extends to the curriculum of multiple programs you may support students in those multiple programs.  Many TLGs support one curriculum and some TLGs support multiple programs.  TLGs play a role that directly supports students’ bootcamp journeys while adding meaning to our pedagogy.

    Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

    As a full-time TLG you will be working in concert with 3 centralized student support teams; tutor team, learning assistant team, grading team.  The centralized nature of these teams provides students from multiple universities with support via  platforms such as video conferencing (Zoom), Slack for written communication, and other proprietary platforms such as our grading tool/platform. Below,  each of the individual component roles and teams of the TLG will be described.

    • Tutor team:  As a tutor you will be working with students on a weekly basis over video conferencing for 50 minutes per week (some students will be allotted two 50-minute sessions per week).  Students will bring questions relating to their weekly homework assignments, class exercises, group projects, and more.  Tutors are assigned to their students for the duration of the boot camp program and often help with both technical and non-technical skills such as success strategies for the boot camp.  As a tutor you will become familiar over time with your students’ learning styles and abilities and have the opportunity to play an important role in easing a student’s journey through the boot camp.

    • Learning Assistant team: As a learning assistant (LA) you will work in our proprietary platform (AskBCS) to support student questions.  Written questions are posed by students in their class Slack and are funneled into a centralized location where our LA team fields the questions, begins written back-and-forth conversations, and helps to direct students to find solutions.  At times, the use of video conferencing is used between student and LA when written conversations would be less effective.

    • Grading team: As a grader you will be working to grade homework assignments and will utilize grading rubrics and grading feedback templates.  The goal of the grading team is to provide feedback to students that help them achieve increasing excellence in their work.  

    Full-time TLG Paradigm

    • As a FT TLG you will be assigned to work as a tutor with multiple students. Part-time students are allotted 1 session per week, full-time students are allotted 2 sessions per week.  Some students will elect to work with their tutors each week but some students will only work with their tutors some weeks and not other weeks.  Tutoring is not mandatory for any student.

    • As a FT TLG, when a student does not schedule or cancels a tutorial session, the TLG will move to the LA team or the Grading team during the hour(s) in which tutorial sessions are not being held. Think of LA work and Grading work as your responsibility when Tutoring is not taking place.  It’s likely that on any given day, the FT TLG will be working as a tutor, an LA, and a Grader.  If the Grading team is working on a backlog then the TLG will step onto the Grading team and similarly if the LA team is backlogged then the TLG will step onto the LA team.

    • A successful candidate will have a growth mindset, technical expertise, industry knowledge,and an ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and concise way.  As a TLG, you will have both direct and indirect student interactions and have the opportunity to help create a positive learning experience for our boot camp students as a mentor, coach, advisor, and teacher.

    Things That Should Be In Your Background:

    • Technical and Pedagogical Skills needed for Bootcamp Program.

    • Education/work experience vary depending on the Boot Camp program.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    • Empathy, high emotional IQ, patience, understanding and the ability to impart your knowledge to learners.

    • Excellent presentation skills – effective in one-on-one, small group, and large group settings.

    Other Attributes That Will Help You In This Role:

    • Agility and willingness to adapt to change, shift course, alter approaches and assume new responsibilities.

    • Ability to self-manage and self-motivate. 

    • High level of reliability and personal responsibility.

    Working Conditions

    • The schedule for this role varies based on student and team needs; however, there may be short breaks throughout the work day. Occasional and rare travel may be needed (non-essential travel is limited due to COVID-19).

    • In the event of an unavoidable absence due to an emergency, religious holiday, or unexpected scheduling conflict, the Full-time TLG must notify their Manager and reschedule any tutorial sessions that will be affected by their absence.

    Physical Requirements

    • This role will primarily be sedentary using a computer, keyboard, and virtual tools to perform most duties.

    Management Responsibilities

    • Management of students assigned for tutoring. Scheduling of students along with providing arrangements for tutorial sessions is the sole responsibility of the FT TLG.
