    Warehouse Assistant & Relief Driver

    Job Summary 

    Reporting to the Transport Supervisor, this role will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day activities of the Johannesburg warehouse as well as collecting and delivering customer shipments from airlines and third-party agents where required. The role will involve assisting the running of Johannesburg storage and warehouse facilities, transporting research samples, clinical trials medicines and other pharmaceutical and healthcare related products in a safe, careful and timely manner whilst maintaining the highest levels of customer care.

    Responsibilities will include:

    • Preparation of all specialist packaging and temperature-controlled consignments for the early morning drivers, including Ambient Packing”; “Refrigerated Packing”; “Dry Ice Packing”; “Infectious Substances Packing”; “Dangerous Goods Packing” and ensuring all mandatory procedures are adhered to.
    • Monitoring and actively managing stock levels at Biocair so that assurance of supply for all packaging systems and equipment are provided at the desired time and in the desired manner. Ensuring replenishment orders are placed in line with supplier lead times to guarantee minimal stock levels are always maintained.
    • Performing all necessary duties to maintain a clean, tidy and safe warehouse, ensuring all materials are stored in the designated areas and ensuring fridges, freezers and Warm Room temperatures are checked and remain within prescribed parameters as well as maintaining accurate records thereof.
    • Maintenance of all reusable packaging systems to include receipt scanning, inspection of components, cleaning and conditioning. Capturing any non-conformities/deviations and escalating to the Transport & Warehouse Supervisor.
    • Ensuring adherence to vehicle maximum weight thresholds and ensuring that provisions are made for the compliant carriage of any designated dangerous goods.
    • Organising, monitoring and controlling goods in/out operations to ensure all "live" shipments are held/stored in the designated areas and all shipment logs are up to date and accurate.
    • Ensuring that Driver’s progress is monitored throughout the day and Operations are kept informed about any potential delays or service quality issues.
    • Organising the end of day dispatch and correctly labelling freight to enable freight check procedures to be completed. Liaising with Operations to ensure that freight checks are completed in a timely manner to enable loading of the night run vehicle(s) and subsequent departure in line with designated cut off times.
    • Ensuring that each vehicle is stored in the most risk-free manner on a nightly basis – either inside or in the full view of security cameras.
    • Being aware of the regulations covering the transportation, labelling, and packaging of hazardous substances and always observing and complying with these regulations.
    • Building positive working relationships with other Drivers, departments and management to deliver excellent communication and customer service. Working proactively with other teams to overcome problems and implement process improvements.

    • Proven experience working within transport planning and/or warehouse role.
    • A full, clean driving licence.
    • Commercial van driving experience.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work well under time pressure as well as the ability to check and maintain accurate documentation.
    • Intermediate MS Office skills.
    • Experience of working within a cold chain or time sensitive multimodal freight forwarding or pharmaceutical industry (ideally in a logistics setting) is highly desirable.
