    Senior Researcher: Pathology (Potchefstroom)

    Description

    • Coordination and supports the management of Research Projects across the Institute these include supporting and coordination of the following aspects of the projects; Project planning and Initiation, Equipment and Research Materials, Project Human Resources, Project Finances, Risk Management and Mitigation , Monitoring, Evaluation, reporting and project close out.
    • Coordination and supports the management of Research, development, and innovation, these include the supporting and coordination of the following Research aspects, Invention, Translation, Commercialisation and Adoption and Use. 
    • Coordination and supports the management of strategic research collaboration and collaboration opportunities; these include the supporting and coordination of Strategic Research partnerships / networks / collaborators and Intra-Inter Institutional Collaboration & Partnerships.  
    • Coordination and supports the management of Human Capacity Development that includes support ofProject staff, students and self.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Plant Pathology or related qualification.
    • Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience.
    • Minimum 8 approved peer review publications in Plant Pathology.
    • Experience in supervising MSc and/or PhD students and obtaining research funding is required.
    • Registration with a relevant scientific registration body will be added advantage.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Research Technician Plant Breeding (LLFV) (Roodeplaat)

    Description

    • Compiling and executing technical activity plans for the implementation of field and greenhouse trials relating to breeding of leafy, fruit or seed vegetables.
    • Plan, conduct and supervise the execution and collection of data.
    • Capture and process technical data with basic analysis.
    • Compile technical reports.
    • Manage project facilities, material and equipment and ensure optimal utilization of resources.
    • Assist with compiling and managing project budgets.
    • Develops technical capacity at an appropriate level.

    Requirements

    • BSc degree or National Diploma (3 years) in Plant Breeding / Horticulture / Plant Production; or a relevant 2-year qualification at a recognised institution plus 3 years applicable experience.
    • Ability to set-up and manage research trials under open-field conditions.
    • Good understanding of weed control, soil cultivation methods, fertilization, spraying for disease and pest control, irrigation systems (installation, operation and maintenance), and sustainable field management.
    • Experience and good understanding of indigenous vegetable production will be an added advantage.
    • Experience and good understanding of plant breeding will be an added advantage.
    • Good understanding of irrigation scheduling and use of soil water content monitoring equipment will be an added advantage.
    • Good verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

    Description

    • Monitor and review the capturing of all physical (moveable and immovable) assets in the physical asset management registers.

    Research Technician -Virology (Three(3) Year Fixed Term Contract (Roodeplaat)

    Description

    • Contributes to DALRRD Research project(s): Survey of viruses on tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and Solanaceous weeds.
    • field work and sample collection - assist with collection of samples on field trips.
    • Viral diagnostics: molecular assays according to set protocols, plants or soil sample storage, nucleic.
    • Viral diagnostics: molecular assays according to set protocols, plant or soil sample storage, nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) extraction and various diagnostic assays, including ELISA, RT-PCR or PCR and gel electrophoresis, viral identification by sanger sequencing and/or NGS.
    • Laboratory management :assist with buffer preparation, organization of the laboratory, management of equipment, sample storage.  
    • Glasshouse or field trials :assist researchers with the tending of plants or the monitoring of pests and diseases in glasshouse or field trials.
    • Health and safety: compliance with general health and safety regulations; demonstrate safe use of safety equipment, safe application of surface sterilizers, sanitizers and pesticides.
    • General : attention to detail and work accuracy, ability to work under pressure and handling of high work loadat times. 

    Requirements

    • MSc Degree in Plant Pathology, Molecular biology, Genetics, Virology, Biochemistry or Honours Degree with 3 years experience and strong skills in virology, molecular diagnostic skills, cloning, sequencing and phylogenetics.
    • Previous work experience within a diagnostic laboratory will be an advantage.
    • Candidate should be capable of designing and carrying out high-level, complex research experiments independently.
    • Ability to work in diverse teams.
    • Ability to be hands-on and excellent problem solving skills.
    • Ability to organize, prioritize and work systematically.
    • Prior experience in molecular laboratory and glasshouse and tunnel facilities.
    • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
    • Excellent communication Skills (Written and Verbal).
    • Drivers license 08/EB driver.
