    Event Intern

    Description

    The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking applications from enthusiastic students who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of event planning and coordination at IWMI's Southern Africa office in Pretoria, South Africa.

    Scope of internship

    This internship opportunity is within the CGIAR Initiative on Diversification in East and Southern Africa to support various events across the region. The intern would have an eye for detail, excellent organizational skills and a creative flair. It would be a perfect opportunity for the intern to contribute to cutting-edge event planning within the research field and work with an international and diverse team of experts in the field of water management. This will also give them an insight into working with people from a dynamic and multicultural work environment.

    The intern will assist in the following areas:

    • Assist in coordinating and executing various events, from concept to completion.
    • Collaborate with the events team on event design, logistics and work with industry professionals representing IWMI.
    • Assist with event marketing and promotional activities to attract attendees and create a buzz.
    • Help create visual content such as infographics, videos and photos to support IWMI's communication efforts.
    • Conduct research to stay up to date with event industry trends and emerging technologies.
    • Support on-site event management ensuring seamless execution.

    Requirements

    • A graduate with a diploma /degree in Event Management, Hospitality, Marketing or related fields.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multicultural environment and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
    • A genuine interest in event planning and a desire to learn and grow within the industry.

    Research Intern

    Description

    The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking applications from enthusiastic students to assist in newly developed virtual field trips through research and development under IWMI’s internship program. The internship will be based at IWMI’s Southern African office in Pretoria, South Africa.

    Scope of internship

    The intern will work closely with CGIAR's research team to create engaging, immersive, informative, innovative and forward-looking virtual experiences that provide insights into agricultural practices and challenges faced by communities in the region, ideally with a focus on gender and youth. The intern would support the CGIAR Initiative on Diversification in East and Southern Africa (also known as the Ukama Ustawi initiative) for various tasks across the region. This internship opportunity is within the and will enable the Intern to work closely with a team of researchers on a range of activities.

    Duringthis internship, the intern will assist in the following areas:

    • Conduct a comprehensive literature review on virtual field trips – definitions, existing technologies, purposes, sectors they are used in, etc.
    • Design and conceptualize virtual field trips for Ukama Ustawi initiative and the East and Southern Africa region more broadly. What could they achieve? To whom should we reach? What are the best mechanisms to do so?
    • Collaborate with the project management team to design and create interactive virtual field trips relevant to the Ukama Ustawi initiative.
    • Develop engaging multimedia content, including videos, images, infographics and interactive elements to enhance the virtual field trip experience with the Communications team.
    • Conduct user testing and evaluation of the virtual field trips with target audiences to gather feedback and improve the overall quality and effectiveness.
    • Prepare a concept note and contribute to project documentation to track the development and outcomes of the virtual field trip research.

    Requirements

    • Currently enrolled in a Master's program related to Design or Psychology with a user experience focus, Strategic Communication or other relevant subjects.
    • Strong interest in sustainable development, food security and environmental education.
    • Familiarity with virtual reality, multimedia content creation, and educational technologies is desirable.

    • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.

    Communication Intern

    Description

    The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking applications from enthusiastic students who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of communications at IWMI's Southern Africa office in Pretoria, South Africa.

    Scope of internship

    This internship opportunity is within the CGIAR Initiative on Diversification in East and Southern Africa and will enable the Intern to work closely with communications and knowledge management experts, researchers and other team members to assist in various communication activities aimed at enhancing IWMI's visibility and promoting its research outcomes. This will also give them an insight into working with people from a dynamic and multicultural work environment.

    The intern will assist in the following areas:

    • Assist in developing engaging content for IWMI's communication channels, including website articles, blog posts, social media posts and newsletters.
    • Support the communications and knowledge management expert in managing IWMI's social media presence by planning and scheduling posts, monitoring engagement and analyzing performance metrics.
    • Assist in developing press releases, media advisories and other materials for distribution to the media. Coordinate media outreach activities, including liaising with journalists, responding to media inquiries and organizing interviews.
    • Help create visual content such as infographics, videos and photos to support IWMI's communication efforts.
    • Assist in organizing and promoting workshops, conferences and other events related to IWMI's research and projects. This may include preparing event materials, coordinating logistics and providing on-site support.
    • Support the maintenance and updating of IWMI's website by uploading content, ensuring accuracy and consistency, and optimizing user experience.
    • Monitor IWMI's media coverage and compile regular reports on communication activities and outcomes.
    • Assist in internal communication activities, including preparing newsletters, announcements and presentations for staff.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Communications, Journalism, Public relations or a related field.
    • Strong ability to write clear, concise and engaging content for various communication channels.
    • Familiarized with social media platforms, content management systems and basic search engine optimization (SEO) principles.
    • Proficiency in graphic design tools including Adobe Creative Suite would be an added advantage.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multicultural environment and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
    • Willingness to take initiative, learn new skills and contribute ideas to improve communication strategies.
