We'd love to hear from you if you have:

• BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering or similar.  Professionally registered requirement with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for Senior applications.

Renewable Energy Skills:

•  Recognisable knowledge relevant in the energy sector with specific exposure to renewable energy
•  Experience with detailed design of energy systems and Owner’s Engineer experience will be advantageous

Transmission Skills:

• Background in the design and delivery of EHV and HV (765kV or 400kV - 132kV) Substations, Primary or Secondary Plant along with skills in analysis of these networks for AIS and GIS substations.
• Experience in Client/project management in the capacity of a technical lead on project required for senior applicants 
• Hands-on knowledge of substation design software such as: CDEGS and others
• Ability to conduct lightning protection studies
• Background in the design and delivery of EHV and HV (765kV or 400kV - 132kV) Transmission Overhead Lines along with skills in analysis 
• Experience in Client/project management in the capacity of a technical lead on project tasks required for senior applicants 
• Hands-on knowledge of overhead line software such as: PLSCAD and others

As a key member of our team, you will provide technical support for feasibility studies, investigations, and project inputs, as well as answer technical queries and contribute to holistic solution designs. Your expert technical knowledge and integrated designs will play a crucial role in the successful and timely execution of projects. Your project input will include:

• Provide technical input for substation construction, refurbishment, and upgrades.
• Conduct electrical distribution studies and design HV/LV electrical power systems, control systems, SCADA, and telemetry.
• Offer support and training to junior staff and the wider team.
• Participate in or lead studies for project planning and contract documentation.
• Contribute to the development of sub-consultancy agreements.
• Attend client and multi-disciplinary meetings.

Is this role right for you?

• Electrical engineering tertiary qualification, Professional registration with ECSA (or other appropriate institution), or willing to pursue professional registration.
• Experience in a professional Electrical design engineering capacity either within a consulting environment or working closely with a consultancy, Understanding and experience of the SANS 10142-1, national and international standards
• Understanding and experience of producing and interpreting complex or detailed design drawings and documentation.
• Specialist knowledge: either developing or developed within at least one specialist area of Electrical engineering.
• Experience of working in roles where knowledge of Electrical engineering and in particular, design, was a key attribute.
• Knowledge of relevant design tools, techniques and related methods e.g. IT systems, Trimble etc. Competent with design software as well as other standard products.

• Experience with web technologies (XML, JavaScript, JSON, HTML, CSS).

• We are currently recruiting for a Senior Energy Design Consultant to join our multi-disciplinary Energy team in our Johannesburg Office or Cape Town Office South Africa. As Arup, we pride ourselves on our extensive support network and our strength in numbers. 
• Due to continued business growth and increasing client demand in response to the urgent need to decarbonise the economies of South Africa and other African countries, Arup is seeking a Senior Engineer to support the delivery of energy projects.
• Supporting the further growth, development and service delivery of the energy consulting team, with a focus on multi-disciplinary aspects of our projects, but also business development and project management (leading our internal teams) on PV, wind, battery storage, green hydrogen, energy transition and mini/micro- grid projects. Focus on grid-connections and large-project context, structure and role-players are important. Financial acumen, with respect to energy projects and project finance is required. Knowledge of industrial processes as well as technologies for decarbonising those processes will be a distinct advantage.
• Business development, client-facing, team leadership, technical skills, written skills, people skills and contractual skills are all of importance. Knowledge of project planning and management, feasibility studies, concept design development and preparation of technical specifications and tender documentation - with a particular focus on photovoltaic, wind, storage, minigrids/micro-grids and grid systems will be an advantage
