    Senior Piping Engineer

    • Are you an experienced Piping Engineer looking to take your career to the next level? Our esteemed global engineering and consulting company, specializing in energy, mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, and environmental sectors, is seeking a talented Senior Piping Engineer on Contract to join our team.

    Responsibilities:

    • Deputies for the Chief Piping Engineer when requested.
    • Assist Chief Piping Engineer with project proposals when requested.
    • Responsible for the design and approval of all piping work on assigned projects.
    • Responsible for preparation and approval of project related standards and job notes.
    • Ensure that engineering activities on assigned projects are executed within budgeted manhours and approved schedules in compliance with project procedures, standards and specifications and in accordance with procedures and the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of South Africa.
    • Review and approve project schedules with the Project Engineer to see that all dates, rates of progress and design periods are realistic.
    • Prepare and approve project specific standards and job notes.

    Requirements:

    • Education: BSc, BEng, BTech in a relevant field
    • Professional Registration: Professional Registered Engineer or equivalent registration.
    • Experience: Minimum of 8 years in the industry.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

    • CAESAR II: Proficiency in CAESAR II for stress analysis.
    • SmartPlant: Experience with SmartPlant reference data.

    Electricity Market Analyst (Electricity Regulation)

    • Reporting to the Executive Manager: Electricity Regulation: the incumbent will work closely with Electricity Market Specialists, Compliance Officers, and the broader Electricity Regulation Division.
    • The incumbent will provide specialised analytical and data-driven support to the company in the regulation and oversight of the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM).
    • The incumbent will analyse electricity market data, identify trends and anomalies, support market surveillance activities, and produce high-quality analytical reports to inform regulatory decision-making, compliance enforcement, and policy development in line with the amended Electricity Regulation Act.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree / B Tech Degree / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Economics, Engineering, Energy Studies, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field as recognized by SAQA
    • A postgraduate qualification in Energy Economics, Power Systems, or Applied Economics will be an advantage
    • Minimum of Five (5) years’ experience in electricity markets, energy analytics, economic analysis, or regulatory analysis
    • Experience working with large datasets and analytical tools
    • Exposure to electricity market operations, pricing mechanisms, or system dispatch is desirable

    The candidate must be competent in the following:

    • Strong Analytical and Quantitative Skills
    • Ability to interpret complex market data and translate insights into regulatory recommendations
    • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools
    • Strong Report Writing and Presentation Skills
    • Ability to work independently and under pressure

    Key responsibilities: The successful incumbent will be responsible for:
    Market Data Analysis and Surveillance Support:

    • Analyse wholesale electricity market data, including bids, offers, dispatch outcomes, prices, and volumes
    • Identify trends, patterns, and anomalies that may indicate market inefficiencies, manipulation, or abuse of market power
    • Support the development and application of market surveillance indicators and analytical models

    Regulatory Intelligence and Reporting:

    • Prepare regular market monitoring reports, dashboards, and briefing notes for the HOD, Executive Manager, and Regulator
    • Provide analytical input into market investigations, compliance assessments, and enforcement actions
    • Maintain market performance databases and analytical tools

     Support to Market Regulation and Policy Development:

    • Provide analytical support in the development and review of market rules, codes, and regulatory frameworks
    • Benchmark South Africa’s electricity market performance against international best practice
    • Support impact assessments for proposed regulatory interventions

     Stakeholder and Inter-Departmental Support:

    • Work with the Market Operator to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable market data flows
    • Support engagement with internal teams (Licensing, Tariffs, Compliance, Legal)
    • Assist in responding to stakeholder queries requiring analytical input

    Systems, Tools, and Continuous Improvement:

    • Contribute to the design, testing, and implementation of market surveillance and analytics systems
    • Continuously improve analytical methodologies and reporting processes
    • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and confidentiality

    Senior Engineer (Power Systems/Energy Engineering) Electricity Regulation

    • Reporting to the Head of the Department: Electricity Pricing and Tariffs: the incumbent will work closely with Financial Analysts, Economists, and other technical specialists within the Electricity Regulation Division.
    • The incumbent will provide engineering and technical expertise to support the assessment of electricity tariff applications and price determinations.
    • The incumbent will also analyse and interpret technical performance data, asset utilisation, network efficiency, and operational assumptions sub-mitted by electricity licensees, and ensure that these are properly aligned with financial and economic analyses.
    • The role strengthens the technical integrity, cost-reflectivity, and defensibility of the company’s electricity pricing and tariff decisions in line with the Electricity Regulation Act.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree / B Tech Degree / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering as recognized by SAQA
    • Registration or eligibility for registration with ECSA will be an advantage
    • A postgraduate qualification in power systems, energy engineering, or related field will be advantageous
    • Minimum of Five (5) years’ experience in the electricity sector, preferably in: Power generation, transmission, or distribution; Utility operations or performance analysis and Regulatory or tariff-related technical assessments
    • Experience interpreting technical performance data and linking it to cost and investment decisions 

    The candidate must be competent in the following:

    • Strong Technical and Analytical Skills
    • Ability to interpret complex engineering data and communicate findings clearly
    • Understanding of electricity system operations and infrastructure performance
    • Strong report writing and presentation Skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

    Key responsibilities: The successful incumbent will be responsible for:

    Technical Assessment of Tariff Applications:

    • Analyse engineering components of tariff submissions, including plant performance, network efficiency, losses, reliability indices, and capacity utilisation
    • Evaluate the technical justification for operating and maintenance costs, capital expenditure, and asset replacement programmes
    • Assess whether technical assumptions underpinning tariff applications are reasonable, efficient, and consistent with industry norms

    Integration of Technical and Financial Analysis:

    • Work closely with financial analysts to align technical performance data with cost drivers and revenue requirements
    • Support the validation of assumptions used in revenue requirement and tariff models
    • Identify inefficiencies or inconsistencies between technical performance and financial outcomes

    Performance and Efficiency Analysis:

    • Analyse technical performance indicators such as availability factors, losses, outages, maintenance practices, and network reliability
    • Benchmark utility performance against national and international best practice
    • Assess the prudence and efficiency of proposed capital and operating expenditure

    Regulatory Support and Advisory:

    • Provide technical input to tariff recommendations, regulatory submissions, and decision-making processes
    • Support responses to stakeholder queries, objections, and appeals related to technical aspects of tariffs
    • Assist in the development and review of tariff methodologies, standards, and regulatory guidelines  

    Stakeholder and Inter-Departmental Engagement:

    • Engage with licensees to clarify technical aspects of tariff submissions where required
    • Collaborate with other departments (Licensing, Compliance, Market Surveillance, Legal)
    • Support participation in hearings, workshops, and consultations on tariff-related matters.
