    Technical Officer (Contract)

    Reference number: E23727

    The Division of Immunology at the University of Cape Town, is seeking two suitably qualified people to fill the position of Technical Officer for immediate appointment on a 12-month T1 contract, renewable contingent on funding.

    The technical officers will join our research team which comprises of local and international clinicians, immunologists and laboratory technicians. The team works in research on maternal and infant health.

    Requirements:

    •  National Diploma in Medical Technology, Bachelor of Technology Degree or Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory sciences, in Immunology or a related field.
    •  2 years experience in laboratory post undergraduate qualification in a range of techniques including experience in biorepository and database (e.g. Freezerworks, Redcap) management
    •  Ability to work well in a team.
    •  Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
    •  The ability to conduct day-to-day operations of data collection activities in a large research project.
    •  Good decision making and problem-solving skills.
    •  Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, internet, and email) at intermediate level.
    •  Non-South African’s must be in possession of an appropriate work permit.
    • The following will be advantageous:
    •  The technical officer will be working in a GCLP-like condition and familiarity and training in this area would
    • also be advantageous.
    •  Ability to work flexible hours
    •  Experience working in Biosafety level 2 laboratory conditions

    Responsibilities:

    •  Perform specialized laboratory techniques related to clinical studies.
    •  Receive, verify and ensure quality of all laboratory specimens.
    •  Preparation and processing of samples according to SOPs.
    •  Writing laboratory SOP’s.
    •  Participating in training of post-graduate students and junior staff in laboratory techniques.
    •  Maintain laboratory specimen storage using Freezerworks or similar
    •  Management of samples in the biobank.
    •  Recording of study data according to study guidelines.
    •  Participate in equipment maintenance and standby duty for responding to alarms.
    •  Ensure adequate laboratory supplies.
    •  Provide and present updated relevant information at meetings.
    •  Sample shipment.

    Finance and Administration Manager

    BIOGRIP is a national research infrastructure (RI) that consists of a network of new and existing research laboratories housed in four nodes, each hosted by a South African university. Each node specializes in an aspect of biogeochemical research, with a central hub, based at UCT, that manages and coordinates the Platform. The nodes support both discipline-specific research and larger-scale integrated and interdisciplinary efforts. BIOGRIP is internationally significant in its scope and capacity and will integrate with and support other RI platforms in South Africa.
    The Finance and Administration Manager will support the Director and Hub to efficiently manage BIOGRIP financial and administrative processes and systems to achieve its mandate. This is a senior position, and the incumbent will be directly responsible for overall administration and management issues in the Platform. This includes coordination of the general and financial administration, human resource matters and control of financial expenditure. Although the Director is accountable for the decisions made regarding management of BIOGRIP, the intention of this senior position is to free up the Director from many of the administrative functions to allow them to concentrate on leadership and strategic issues.
    BIOGRIP invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Finance and Administration Manager on a 3-year contract for appointment as soon as possible.

    Requirements for the job:

    •  Relevant NQF level 6 qualification in Accounting, Finance or similar (national diploma or higher).
    •  5 years' relevant experience.
    •  Strong financial management and project management skills.
    •  Excellent monitoring, scheduling and reporting skills with high attention to detail.
    •  Good administrative, organizational and planning skills.
    •  Experience in using SAP or similar software.
    •  Must have strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, especially related to working with stakeholders at different levels.
    •  The ability to work flexibly and independently in a higher education research environment.
    •  Must have good analytical thinking and problem solving skills.

    The following would be advantageous:

    •  Further or postgraduate qualifications in finance and/or management.

    •  Experience with managing research finances.

    Responsibilities include:

    •  General and Office Administration — oversee and coordinate all administrative processes.
    •  Human Resources Administration — coordinate and manage HR processes and assist the Director with the recruitment and appointment of staff.
    •  Financial Planning and Budgeting — conduct financial reviewing, planning and budgeting, in conjunction with the
    • Director for strategic budgeting, other BIOGRIP staff in project financial planning, and delegating budget preparation to project officers where appropriate.
    •  Financial Administration & Management — administer all financial activities, including salaries and procurement processes, monitor income and expenditure, recommend and take action on behalf of the Director, and delegate finance-related tasks to BIOGRIP administrative and research staff as appropriate.
    •  Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting — ensure all financial activities are monitored, including delegation of monitoring as appropriate and supervising such delegation, compilation of financial and administrative records, and regular compilation of financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.

    Production Coordinator and Researcher

    The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Communication and Marketing Department (CMD) seeks a highly competent Production Coordinator & Researcher to join the Newsroom and Video Production unit to contribute to the delivery of excellent multimedia content. The incumbent should have a complete understanding of all aspects of video production, from pre- to post-; the ability to: coordinate video projects from start to finish, research and coordinate the use of visual and audio elements to communicate a clear message that consistently conveys UCT’s strategic goals, its vision and mission.

    The successful candidate will research video content and coordinate the production of video and other multimedia content within the Video Production unit from concept to completion. This includes conducting research, preparing research packs, booking freelancers and coordinating workflows of internal staff, setting up shoots with internal and external stakeholders and scripting video and multimedia content.

    The successful candidate will be a skilled, diplomatic communicator who is able to work independently and as part of a team, and who is both service and systems orientated.

    Requirements for the job:

    •  An NQF 6 or higher tertiary qualification, preferably in journalism, film or media studies.
    •  At least 3 years’ relevant work experience in a film, digital or communications environment
    •  Excellent writing, proofreading and researching ability for a variety of styles and formats for different platforms including social media, websites and internal communication.
    •  Proof of coordination experience in a film/communications, marketing or media environment
    •  Significant experience in overseeing digital and multimedia projects
    •  Ability to facilitate and navigate team dynamics
    •  Solid computer skills and proficiency in appropriate software, such as MS Office, Adobe Acrobat or similar
    •  Good command of English (reading, writing and speaking)
    •  Excellent planning, scheduling and time management abilities
    •  Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
    •  Ability to operate well in a high-pressured environment.
    •  Quick decision-making and problem-solving skills

    •  Knowledge of current multimedia conventions and practices
    •  An understanding of the South African media landscape, preferably in higher education

    •  Knowledge of online publishing conventions, specifically relating to the publication of news content
    •  Knowledge of UCT policies relating to the Communication and Marketing Department

    Responsibilities:

    •  To ensure that all video content is researched, allocated, coordinated and published according to schedule
    •  To support the video production processes by coordinating shoots, creating schedules, organizing edits, booking freelancers and filing documentation
    •  To compile and research content for video productions and coordinating multimedia-appropriate copy for a variety of news and multimedia platforms
    •  Research, facilitate and coordinate multimedia and multiplatform production processes
    •  To assist the video production unit with a variety of tasks, including content development, scriptwriting and related liaison
    •  Conduct research interviews for video projects
    •  Booking of freelancers for multimedia projects and events
    •  Verify copyright licensing agreements
    •  Coordinate video production processes from conception to delivery via scheduling tools and reports
    •  Coordinate CMD protocol documents such as job cards, scheduling templates, call sheets and checklists
    •  Source images/stock and other footage
    •  Assist the Head of Video Production with day-to-day diary management and in coordinating projects
    •  write in a range of styles for appropriate multimedia platforms
    •  Coordinate the flow of video projects by researching events and projects needing pre- and post- publicity
