    Section Manager Mining

    Job Description

    • You will be Developing, maintaining updating and communicating all legal and operational policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines relevant to the area of responsibility, ensuring that safety, health and environmental targets are set and achieved by ensuring high personal integrity on safety as a core value as well as understanding and applying the safety Management system.

    More of your responsibilities will include:

    • Holding the legal appointment in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 Regulation 2.6.1 as an appointed Subordinate Manager to assist the Mining Manager appointed in terms of Section 3(1) of the MHSA in the carrying out of their duties and responsibilities within your area of responsibility.
    • Coordinating and hosting inspectorate/ DMRE and visitors as well as chair SHE accident/ incident investigations
    • Ensuring effective contractor management and effective planning and rehabilitation of mined areas
    • Creating and implementing agreed upon operational planning and production targets, ensuring that integrated operational plans are designed and are practical and executable and supports business strategy
    • Ensuring that costs allocated for sections / shafts within the operation are controlled within the prescribed budget and compares with internationally accepted benchmarks and effective cost saving methods
    • Effective optimisation and asset optimisation of Operational Capabilities through improving standards, support the implementation of new mining methods / technologies and improvement in production, planning and safety
    • Effectively manage underperforming sections / shafts and optimise machinery and equipment
    • Effective people management meaning all roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
    • Evaluating requirements of departmental staff, ensure that individuals are provided with the correct development opportunities, evaluate training courses as well as oversee the development of training material

    This role is in the Mining department at Band 6 and reports to the Mining Manager.

    Qualifications

    • Degree / BSc in Mining Engineering (NQF 7)
    • Mine managers certificate of competency (Mandatory)
    • Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (advantageous)
    • Registered with the SA Colliery Managers Association
    • Management Development Programme or the equivalent would be advantageous

    Experience

    • 2 years’ experience at section manager level or acting as section manager
    • Extensive experience in the Underground Coal Mining Environment
    • Experience in assessing management principles around mining and related equipment and associated operational standards and philosophies
    • Safety Leadership Program
    • Valid driver’s licence

    Additional Information

    • A good knowledge of legislation relating to the mining industry. E.g. Mine, Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act and Environmental Legislation, Basic Conditions of Employment and the Labour Relations Act
    • Aware of Best practices and new technologies relating to the mining industry
    • Knowledge of mine planning principles and processes

    Environmental Officer (12 Months Fixed Term Contract)

    Job Description

    The Environmental Officer is responsible for monitoring and reporting environmental activities and environmental performance on site to the Environmental Coordinator.

    More of your responsibilities will include:

    • Assisting in retaining ISO 14001 certification and minimize operational impacts on the environment
    • Assisting with internal and external environmental audits so that Operations are legally compliant changes to new laws are implemented as well as implementation of standards and the Environmental policy
    • Capturing and analysing collected accurate environmental data on time reporting on the operation
    • Conducting environmental inspections on site to identify environmental impacts such as Air Quality; Water Management; Waste Management; Land and Biodiversity management and ensure that action plans to address the gaps or findings are addressed by different stakeholders
    • Compiling mine specific environmental reports from internal inspections and audits
    • Proactively identifying and advising the Environmental Coordinator on environmental challenges identified during internal inspections and audits
    • Capturing environmental incidents identified in the Mine environmental incident reporting system
    • Conducting internal site inspections/audits to identify deviations from the mine approved Environmental Management Programme Report legal requirement
    • Providing support to the Environmental Coordinator/Superintendent on operational compliance with relevant environmental legal requirements and other SHE legal requirements
    • Submitting various environmental reports in accordance with Mines’ Environmental Management System (EMS) to the Environmental coordinator on the specified timeframes
    • Assisting the Environmental Coordinator in the implementation of a systematic process to track environmental legal compliance on all conditions and commitments from EMPRs; EAs and IWULs
    • Ensuring that all environmental issues are identified and managed the internal mine environmental management system
    • Assisting the operation in obtaining environmental permits/licenses on time to allow project implementation within project timelines
    • Managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, understand and deliver on their departmental needs, and identify and resolve issues timeously

    Qualifications

    • Advanced Diploma / Degree in Environmental Management or a related field (NQF 7)

    Experience & Knowledge

    • Minimum of 2 years’ operational experience in managing environmental issues preferably within a mining environment
    • Minimum of 2 years of Environ Professional in Training/ Environmental Trainee experience in the related discipline
    • Experience in Water, Land, Air, Waste, Biodiversity, Environmental Management systems and Stakeholder management in the Mining industry
    • Experience in the use of Enablon and or Isometrix environmental management system

    Additional Information

    • Knowledge of the relevant South African environmental legislation including the Mine Health and safety Act
    • Sound Knowledge of subscribed Environmental Management standards and ISI 14001
    • An in-depth knowledge of subscribed Environmental Management standards and ISO 14001
    • Good knowledge of Safety and sustainable development policies, procedures
    • Sound knowledge of the mining industry
    • Understanding of latest trends and practices within the environmental industry
    • Understanding of Water Management Practices
