Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Design, or a related field (preferred).
• Strong visual sense and understanding of design principles.
• Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign .
• Excellent research and image sourcing skills.
• Experience with word press and WoodWing content management systems (CMS) is a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong work ethic.
• A self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the initiative to find solutions.
• Excellent emotional intelligence and the ability to work in a team and build positive relationships with colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities

Image Sourcing:

• Research and scout for high-quality images to visually complement stories assigned by editors.
• Secure image rights through licensing or by contacting photographers directly.
• Maintain an organized image database for efficient access and retrieval.

Page Design (Print):

• Collaborate with editors to design visually appealing layouts for assigned sections of the newspaper.
• Utilize layout software (e.g., Adobe InDesign) to create engaging page compositions.
• Ensure clear hierarchy and visual flow to guide readers through the content.

Digital Content Management:

• Upload and optimize images for our digital news site, ensuring proper sizing and format.
• Craft clear and concise captions that provide context and additional information for online readers.
• Assist with other content management tasks as needed (e.g., scheduling posts, social media promotion).

Minimum Requirements

• Over 8 years of journalism experience;
• Journalism/tertiary qualification or equivalent experience;
• Exceptional news sense and editorial judgement;
• Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail;
• Insightful understanding of South Africa:
• Photographic/visual/multimedia skills an advantage;
• Impeccable general knowledge;
• Willing to travel;
• Willing to work some weekends and after hours when required;
• Able to work virtually;
• Driver’s licence.

Duties and Responsibilities

Job overview:

• To identify, initiate, investigate, research, and produce high quality, agenda-setting journalism for Daily Maverick’s online platform and its print publication, DM168.

The successful candidate will:

• Produce regular exclusive and investigative articles;
• Produce accurate hard news stories, including breaking news;
• Investigate and research original content and ideas for news stories, features and analysis;
• Generate and maintain a strong network of contacts covering various areas including politics, courts, business, environment and social justice;
• Deliver writing of a high standard that is engaging and clear;
• Adhere to deadlines;
• Mentor younger team members;
• Develop and manage a diary.
