    Research Specialist

    Objectives of Role

    Research & Project Management:

    • Plan and scope research to deliver the required insights for Funda Wande priorities.
    • Design and manage the research processes for all types of research including desktop, commissioned or ‘test and learn’ research (landscape reviews to inform business case development, learning reports, ecosystem research, case studies, evaluations).
    • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research involving both internal and external parties.
    • Review research quality, highlighting bottlenecks or discrepancies in data quality, and provide solutions to ensure that quality data is readily available for contextual insight reports.
    • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets and reporting on Business Intelligence data.
    • Collaborate with the Programmes Team to produce and publish learning briefs based on insights gained from Implementation. 
    • Ensure that risks associated with own area of work are identified and there are proper mitigation strategies/ plans in place.

    Data Management:

    • Support the development of a Central Data Management System and ensure that all research and monitoring data is centrally stored and accessible to relevant Funda Wande teams and relevant other stakeholders.
    • Participate in sessions of reflection of the use of communities of practice and collect insights gained from the qualitative and quantitative research projects

    Research Reporting:

    • Collaborate with the Head of R&D and Communications team on the consolidation, packaging, presentation and dissemination of research and evaluation reports to different stakeholders through appropriate channels and/or platforms. 

    Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to determine research needs, achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships to ensure that research contributes to strategic priorities and delivers required outcomes
    • Vet and manage all external research and evaluation suppliers.
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to host and deliver learning events and initiatives.

    Monitoring & Evaluation:

    • Monitor and evaluate each research projects to drive improvements
    • Support the design and implementation of internal monitoring, evaluation & reporting framework
    • Engage and collaborate with our external evaluators throughout the lifespan of external evaluations for relevant interventions.

    Experience and Qualifications

    Knowlege & Experience:

    • Minimum 3 - 5 years relevant work experience
    • Experience in Research planning and execution
    • Experience in Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
    • Experience in Writing up of research, monitoring and reporting
    • Experience in defining and implementing research and insights capabilities essential  
    • Experience within the education, philanthropy, economic development and policy space are advantageous
    • Experience in designing, implementing, and showcasing research, monitoring, evaluation to drive business case development, decision-making, systemic change and advocacy essential.

    Qualifications/Other Requirements:

    • Master’s degree in Education / Economics / Development Economics / Development Studies.

    Project Manager: Strategic Partnerships, Comms & Advocacy (PM: SPCA)

    Objectives of Role

    As the PM: SPCA you will be responsible for performing the following activities:

    Stakeholder Management

    • Assist with stakeholder mapping; identify collaboration opportunities; monitor and report on stakeholder, sector and other politically significant activities.
    • Identify, develop, and maintain strategic relationships with key players within the sector.
    • Coordinate stakeholder engagements, communication and reporting as it relates to the functional area

    Grant Management

    •  Assist with the development of a funder strategic framework and proposals with yearly objectives and programmes.
    • Maintain a Data Management System to house all Funda Wande strategic partner agreements and related information.
    • Plan, coordinate and manage all partner activities, engagements, and reporting (monthly, quarterly, and yearly) requirements on behalf of Funda Wande

    Communications & Advocacy Initiatives

    • Design and manage Funda Wande’s internal and external communications plan.
    • Develop and manage Funda Wande’s advocacy activities and inputs as required, incl. events, research, and communications.
    • Develop content & campaigns for all relevant digital platforms, incl Op-Eds, thought pieces, research.
    • Monitor, track, and update Funda Wande’s overall communications portfolio including social media, website, and other communication platforms.

    Talent Management

    • Ensure talent management and development planning for the unit (i.e. job descriptions, recruitment & selection, onboarding, performance management, wellness management, training and development, discipline and responsibility, talent engagements, etc.) is in place and carried out in accordance with all HR Policies and Processes for both internal and independent contractors - in consultation with /support of HR team.
    • Effectively manage service providers according to Funda Wande guidelines.

    Budget Management

    • Input into the Annual Budget and ensure financial planning, tracking and reporting on the Budget for the unit (i.e. plan, schedule, and cost activities according to allocated budget), incl.
    • Budget for the unit (i.e. plan, schedule, and cost activities according to allocated budget).
    • SPCA Unit’s budget holder and sign off per set thresholds for procurement of goods and services (e.g. materials, independent contractors, office equipment, courier services, etc.) on planned activities.

    Experience and Qualifications

    • Relevant degree and/or diploma in Education / Development Studies / Project Management / Media/ Journalism / Finance, Operations, Communications, or a related field.
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience at a similar level coordinating similar projects within philanthropy, education, or development sector.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential. Candidates should be able to craft clear, concise messaging for different audiences.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills are crucial for handling multiple tasks, deadlines, and campaigns.
    • Strong understanding of the South African education sector
    • An understanding of ethical considerations in communication, including issues like privacy and honesty, is essential.

    Competencies

    • An interest in and alignment to Funda Wande’s vision and values
    • Be extremely organized, multitask and have effective communication skills.
    • A high level of understanding of project cycle management.
    • Considerable experience in budgeting/financial procedures.
    • Proven ability to provide technical support and guidance to a diverse team.
    • Good knowledge and understanding of key aspects of development work within education.
    • Experience monitoring processes and systems in new and rapidly growing organizations.
    • Great team player and high degree of emotional intelligence.
