    Plennegy Research: Laboratory Technician

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Label sample plates correctly
    • Prepare samples accordingly for DNA extraction. This may include cutting seed, germinating seed, sampling roots or sampling leaves / flesh.
    • Use the correct DNA extraction buffer for certain crops and sample types.
    • Selecting the correct protocol on the DNA extraction instrument and perform the DNA extraction.
    • Operating the DNA extraction instrument.
    • Diluting DNA accordingly for certain crops and sample types.
    • Maintaining and updating lab journal daily.
    • General maintenance of centrifuges, Oktopure, ice machine, pipettes, fridges and freezers and all other lab equipment.
    • Organizing SNP markers in freezers.
    • Disposal of waste in containers daily and refiling wash containers.
    • Store all documents in relevant files daily.
    • Interacts appropriately and respectfully with others
    • Offers expert service / advice to colleagues.
    • Displays a positive attitude towards the company and its goals.
    • Develops constructive and co-operative working relationships with team members inside and outside the team.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • National Diploma in B Tech / BSc Agric / BSc similar area (essential)
    • 1 years experience in Graduate placement or Intern in a molecular biology Lab (essential)
    • 1-3 years experience in the Plant genetics or molecular biology (advantage)
    • B Tech / BSc / BSc Agric degree (NQF level 7) (advantage)

    Starke Ayres: Trainee Seed Analyst

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Sampling of seed

    • Sampling of seed lots according to ISTA rules.

    Defect determination and purity analysis on seed

    • Obtain submitted sample according to the ISTA rules and perform defect determination and purity analysis.
    • Do kernel count when requested.
    • Report results on the job card and enter the results the register and EMS
    • Evaluation of seedlings in a germination test, according to the ISTA rules
    • Do a first count on the germination as prescribed by the ISTA rules.
    • Counts needs to be reported as a percentage on the germination card, register and EMS and when necessary completed on a lab report.
    • Make decisions on retesting when replicates are not within tolerance.

    Quality control

    • Test seed received and seed presented by the factory with regard to grading, defects, purity, germination and moisture.
    • Check the physical appearance of the bags, labels, stacking of pallets and quantities of a presentation and represented seed in stock.
    • Test germination of represented seed and process failures when necessary.

    Laboratory maintenance

    • Record daily temperature readings on all apparatus, storerooms and laboratory.
    • Supervise general maintenance of the seed store.
    • Control and calibration of balances.
    • Control of all laboratory stock.

    Reports quality of seed samples

    • Complete seed analysis reports for presentation and representation samples for Production, Export and Marketing.

    General

    • Respond to queries from Head Office, Packing, Production, Export, Marketing, Quality, Assurance Manager.
    • Perform any reasonable task allocated by superiors to ensure the effective functioning of the seed-testing laboratory.

    Requirements

    QUALIFICATION:

    • Grade 12 with Biology
    • Agricultural Diploma / B. Tech / Bachelor's degree/applicable experience (ideal)
    • Seed Biology course
    • Seed Science course

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Development and execution on Sales Budget for the allocated area

    • Do an in-depth analysis of agricultural activities and determine equipment requirements in conjunction with Product Specification Committee.
    • Develop an annual Segment Sales Budget focusing on key products.
    • Develop a Product / Segment sales plan.
    • Execute against set unit sales and profit objectives.

    • Introduce actions and activities to promote the brand and products in allocated areas e.g. Study groups, Farmers Groups, Agricultural Institutions such as Agricultural Schools, Colleges and Universities, Demonstrations, Farmer’s Days, Collaborations with other Businesses such as Seed and other input providers.
    • Initiate Sales & Marketing opportunities by continuous area analysis and identifying opportunities.
    • Reach out to individual farmers and potential customers to create demand and refer to Dealers.
    • Plan and execute activities in line with Sales & Marketing plans.

    Stock Management

    • Liaise with logistics and wholegoods regarding delivery of stock items.
    • Ensure that stock in his/her portfolio is visible and maintained as per Company directives.
    • Manage dealer’s credit facilities to ensure the business grow with market demand.

    Administration

    • Develop robust knowledge of all products in respective segment.
    • Document all administrative work on SAGE.
    • Monitor industry trends and competitor activities.
    • Track expenses in an organized fashion.
    • Report weekly/monthly on the status of field marketing activities.
    • Document and share lead/customer intelligence with sales team.
    • Open communication to Sales Manager and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

    Plennegy Research: Research Technician

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Breeding Operations

    • Monitor and report plant health, stress indicators, and abnormalities under field, net-house, and glasshouse conditions.
    • Organise weekly field walks with the farm manager, supervisor, and breeder (when available).
    • Execute planting schedules in coordination with the supervisor and field team.
    • Oversee seed processing including harvesting, drying, cleaning, treating, labelling, cataloguing, weighing, and cold-room organisation.
    • Collect and record field, tunnel, and nursery trial data accurately.
    • Execute and supervise hand pollinations (selfing and crossing).
    • Identify and report off-type plants.
    • Complete phytosanitary applications and support government officials during inspections.
    • Oversee and execute seed fumigation.

    Molecular & Pathology Support

    • Organise and execute leaf sampling for DNA analysis.
    • Create sample lists and complete online submission forms.
    • Pack and dispatch seed for biotechnology and pathology projects.
    • Maintain accurate seed receiving and shipment records.
    • Upload and share DNA results on the seed-shipment platform.
    • Communicate molecular results to the team.

    Maintenance

    • Report maintenance needs for tunnels, irrigation systems, equipment, and related infrastructure to the farm manager.
    • Report housekeeping and hygiene issues in tunnels, fields, and workrooms to the farm manager and team supervisor.

    Supervision of Labour

    • Coordinate labour requirements with the breeder and supervisor.
    • Assist the supervisor in overseeing daily operations in the workroom, tunnels, and fields.
    • Promote productivity, efficiency, and safe work practices.
    • Report issues related to attendance and timekeeping to the farm manager and supervisor.

    Stock Management

    • Maintain adequate stock levels of breeding supplies.
    • Communicate shortages to the farm manager.

    Pest & Disease Control

    • Conduct daily scouting for pests and diseases in fields, tunnels, and net-houses.
    • Monitor chemical spray efficacy and report any issues.

    Personnel Management

    • Assist in training new staff and provide seasonal refresher training for permanent staff.
    • Contribute to a positive work culture.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Education (Essential)

    • BSc in Genetics, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field (Diploma or Degree).
    • Drivers License.

    Experience (Preferred)

    • Experience with vegetable or maize crop cultivation.
    • Experience in field, tunnel, or controlled-environment production.
    • Experience supervising or coordinating field labour.

    REQURIEMENTS:

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Matric Certificate (Grade 12).
    • Minimum 2 years previous experience as a sales executive in a dealership environment (used vehicles preferred).
    • Valid South African driver’s license.
