Pietermaritzburg (also called Maritzburg by the locals), the administrative capital city of KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa, was named after the founding leaders of the city, Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz. With a population of about 750,000 people, it is known as the “City of Flowers” because it is the location of one of the country’s National Botanical Gardens.
