    BESS Engineer

    Position Overview

    • An established renewable energy company is seeking an experienced BESS Engineer to support the delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
    • This role sits at the interface of the modelling, engineering and commercial product teams. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping BESS solutions from pre-sales and tender stage contract design through to contract finalisation and project execution, ensuring the technical robustness and commercial competitiveness of BESS deployments.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the BESS Project Lead by working closely with OEMs and project stakeholders to ensure the integrated solution is correctly designed, built, tested, commissioned and operated.
    • Develop and maintain technical Employer’s Requirements (ERs) for BESS procurement and EPC tendering, including functional and conceptual design activities to ensure the system meets functional, commercial and compliance requirements.
    • Undertake technology and contractor technical reviews for hybrid PV+BESS and standalone BESS projects, ensuring compatibility, cost-effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
    • Review project contracts, warranties and technical specifications to ensure relevant BESS performance parameters are appropriately captured contractually.
    • Provide technical oversight during construction, including defining and enforcing quality hold points for BESS installation and reviewing EPC contractors’ quality control plans and inspection and testing plans.
    • Conduct or witness critical inspections of battery container integrity, thermal management systems, fire detection and suppression systems, electrical connections and earthing during procurement and construction.
    • Manage internal and third-party technical due diligence workstreams.
    • Support the commercial team during technical negotiations and contract finalisation for EPC, procurement and PPA negotiations.
    • Contribute to ongoing solution and product development initiatives.
    • Drive the development of in-house standards relating to standalone and hybrid BESS.

    Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

    • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Engineering or a closely related discipline.
    • Postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in energy storage or hybrid PV+BESS projects, with demonstrable involvement across multiple project lifecycle stages including design, procurement, construction and commissioning.
    • Strong working knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology fundamentals, including cell chemistry, degradation mechanisms, thermal behaviour and safety characteristics.
    • Understanding of grid codes, regulatory frameworks and technical standards.
    • Understanding of BESS and hybrid control systems.
    • Experience drafting or contributing to Employer’s Requirements (ERs), technical specifications or scope of work documents for BESS procurement or EPC contracts.
    • Previous experience in technical due diligence, design or practical integration testing of BESS.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex BESS engineering concepts for commercial, legal and financial stakeholders.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Willingness to travel.
    • Full clean driver’s licence.

    Desirable

    • Knowledge of BESS performance modelling and dispatch modelling tools.
    • Familiarity with FIDIC contract frameworks, particularly the Silver Book, and how technical requirements are incorporated into EPC agreements.
    • Knowledge of SCADA and OT environments.
    • Experience supporting lender due diligence processes or working with independent technical advisors on bankability assessments.
    • Working knowledge of fire safety engineering for BESS, including off-gas detection technologies, suppression system design and emergency response planning.

    Commissioning Engineer

    Position Overview

    • A leading renewable energy company is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to provide comprehensive field technical support to customers, with a focus on commissioning utility-scale solar projects across the EMEA region.
    • The successful candidate will verify, test and energise single-axis tracker systems at utility-scale photovoltaic sites, ensuring every tracker row meets performance, safety and reliability standards before becoming operational. The role also includes providing technical support, troubleshooting, firmware updates and customer training.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Perform detailed pre-commissioning inspections on tracker rows, drive systems, power supplies and cabling.
    • Execute cold and hot commissioning while providing regular progress updates.
    • Manage the commissioning process through to customer acceptance.
    • Provide comprehensive technical support to customers.
    • Diagnose and resolve networking issues.
    • Implement tracker hardware and firmware retrofits in accordance with technical service bulletins while ensuring minimal disruption and full documentation of changes.
    • Deliver training sessions for EPC and O&M personnel covering start-up, stow, fault recovery and routine maintenance.
    • Prepare reports, service proposals and procedure manuals.
    • Act as the voice of the customer when collaborating with internal teams on product improvements.
    • Manage multiple customer projects simultaneously.
    • Deliver regular progress updates to management and customers, supported by data, evidence and sound technical judgement.

    Skills & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related STEM discipline.
    • Demonstrated customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical solutions effectively.
    • Ability to interface and communicate with customers on a regular basis.
    • Willingness to travel extensively (approximately 75%).
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
    • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to spend most of the day walking while carrying tools.
    • Excellent customer service skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong understanding of technical support for utility-scale and distributed generation (DG) projects.
    • Experience commissioning solar tracking systems.
    • Experience working with various control and network systems.
    • Strong knowledge of PV technology and its applications.
    • Proficiency in additional European languages, particularly Spanish.
    • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
    • Experience with power generation troubleshooting.

    Contract Manager

    • AltGen is looking for a Contracts Manager to join a renewable energy EPC based in Cape Town for a 12-month contract. The role will support the planning, administration and execution of renewable energy construction projects.

    Responsibilities:
    Contract Planning

    • Support initial project team and stakeholder engagement activities.
    • Assist with contract-related communication, presentations and supporting documentation.
    • Establish and maintain folder structures for draft contracts and associated schedules.
    • Track, compare and control revisions and changes to contracts and schedules.
    • Prepare clean execution versions of contracts for circulation and signature.

    Contract Administration and Execution

    • Establish and maintain contract management systems for executed contracts.
    • Participate in project team meetings and contractual progress reviews.
    • Identify contractual risks, opportunities, deviations and deficiencies.
    • Support Project Managers with mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
    • Administer and monitor EPC contracts to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, notices and deliverables.
    • Administer and monitor major subcontractor and supplier agreements to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
    • Draft contractual correspondence, approvals, certificates, consents, notices and requests for review and approval by Project Managers.
    • Coordinate contract execution processes, including signatures, notarisation and apostille requirements where necessary.
    • Manage contract records, scanning, filing and document archiving within the project library.

    Contract Deliverables and Compliance

    • Establish and maintain registers for contractual communications and deliverables.
    • Track EPC contract obligations and associated project agreements, including: Implementation Agreements, PPAs, Grid Connection Agreements, Site agreements, Environmental approvals and permits
    • Maintain hold point and deliverables registers for EPC contracts, suppliers and subcontractors.
    • Ensure contractual deliverables are submitted to clients and stakeholders within required timeframes.
    • Ensure suppliers and subcontractors provide required deliverables and documentation on time.
    • Assist with the preparation of monthly reports and project documentation.

    Process Improvement and Support

    • Support the development and implementation of contractual processes and procedures.
    • Coordinate workshops relating to contract administration processes such as project communications, payment procedures and insurance claims.
    • Act as the first point of contact for contractual guidance and support to project teams.
    • Escalate complex contractual matters to senior management where appropriate.
    • Support the administration and management of insurance claims and related processes.

    Requirements:

    • Degree in Contracts Management, Law or Quantity Surveying
    • Minimum of 1-3 years experience in contract administration within EPC, or construction projects
    • Experience supporting the administration of EPC contracts and subcontractor agreements
    • Exposure to FIDIC contracts
