    Instructional Coach - Eastern Cape

    Purpose of Role    
    Reporting to the Lead: Eastern Cape Intervention, the role of the Instructional Coach is to build teacher capacity and their understanding of instructional practices in the Foundation Phase education. The Instructional Coach’s main focus will be to support the HoD in managing and affecting teaching and learning in the Foundation Phase level. The role is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modelling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to educators.

    To be successful in this role, you will need to have passion to motivate and work with others as a team player, especially with critical stakeholders such as the School Management Team (SMT), District Officials, Departmental Heads (DH), and Teachers. You would also need to be analytical, adaptable, professional and possess strong communication, advocacy, presentation, reporting and interpersonal skills. 

    Objectives of Role    
    Teacher Training and development

    • Support the instructional development of all Foundation Phase teachers
    • Orientate teachers on teaching and learning material.
    • Conduct Pedagogical Content Knowledge trainings for all teachers
    • Provide technical support to Foundation Phase teams (Funda Wande website and APP and Reading
    • Academy)

    Foundation Phase Departmental Heads (DH) Support program

    • Support DH on managing content development of their phase teachers at their schools and establish
    • Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) within and outside schools
    • Support HoDs on the Quality Management System through workshops, lesson observations and feedback.

    School Management Team (SMT) support & Advocacy

    • Engages SMTs on the management and monitoring of teaching and Learning in the phase
    • Develop and maintain good working relationships with district teams
    • Maintain relationships with the provincial curriculum team.

    Administration

    • Prepare and maintain schedule of field work
    • Submit a coaching log and any pertinent data requests/coaching documentation
    • Submit reports for activities conducted

    Afrikaans Specialist - Cape Town

    Purpose of Role    
    Reporting to the Lead of the Western Cape Intervention, the main objective of the role will be to support Subject Advisors, Departmental Heads and Lead Teachers in managing effective teaching and learning in the Foundation in Funda Wande pilot schools and WCED rollout schools.

    To be successful in this role, you will need to have a background in education and an understanding of instructional practices in the Foundation Phase.     Objectives of Role    
    As the FOUNDATION PHASE SPECIALIST (AFRIKAANS): WC Intervention you will be responsible for performing the following activities

    Subject Advisors, Departmental Heads and Lead Teachers Support

    • Support Subject Advisors & Departmental Heads on content development of teachers at their schools
    • Support in Departmental Heads and Lead Teachers Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
    • Support Subject Advisors, Departmental Heads through workshops, lesson observations and
    • feedback on Funda Wande’s Training materials.
    • Work in collaboration with the DCES for Afrikaans at WCED Head office

    Teacher Training and development

    • Lead the instructional development & training of Foundation Phase Teachers in Funda Wande’s

    Project Specialist: Universities -Grahamstown

    Purpose of Role    

    • The purpose of the role is to work with universities and other agencies to support pre- and in-service teacher education in the Foundation Phase with a focus on early literacy.

    Objectives of Role    
    Teacher education/training for teaching early literacy in the Foundation Phase:
    Teaching (and in some cases, coordinating) on the following courses developed collaboratively by the Centre for Social Development (CSD) at Rhodes University and Funda Wande:

    • The Advanced Certificate in Foundation Phase Literacy Teaching
    • The aligned Short Courses in Foundation Phase Literacy Teaching
    • The Short Course in Coaching for Teacher Professional Development

    Development of teacher education resources in African languages:

    • Assisting in the continuing development of resources to be used in the Rhodes CSD/Funda Wande
    • courses (e.g. videos, assessment tools, etc.)
    • Assisting in the creation of an online version of the Short Courses aligned to the Advanced Certificate
    • in Foundation Phase Literacy Teaching
    • Assisting in the development of training videos in the 9 official African languages to enable the versioning of Funda Wande’s Reading Academy

     Research and mentoring/supervising postgraduate students

    • Keeping abreast of research in early literacy learning and teaching
    • Participating in Funda Wande and CSD research projects
    • Where appropriate, participating in Funda Wande research and the Funda Wande Community of
    • Practice (CoP)
    • Where appropriate, co-supervising postgraduate students who are researching early literacy

    Advocacy for early literacy teacher education

    • Attending conferences, writing articles and learning briefs, etc
    • Advocating for the use of Funda Wande resources (e.g. videos, workbooks, Reading Academy) in
    • teacher professional development at universities
    • Participating in Funda Wande and CSD advocacy for teacher professional development and for the
    • CSD/Funda Wande courses

    Administration

    • Attending CSD and Funda Wande meetings where appropriate
    • Carrying out administrative duties related to teaching on and coordinating courses (e.g.,planning,
    • recruitment, registration, marking, reports to funders, etc.)
    • Assisting the Project Manager: Universities with administration related activities
    • Assisting with the organization of the Funda Wande Literacy Communities of Practice (CoP)

    Experience and Qualifications    

    • Primary school teaching qualification (must include teaching of early literacy)
    • Minimum MEd (preferably with an early literacy focus)
    • It will be an advantage to have a PhD or be working towards one
    • If the appointee does not have a PhD nor is studying towards one, they will be expected to register for a PhD in early literacy (part-time) at Rhodes University (cost of tuition will be covered by Rhodes)

    Project Manager: Western Cape Intervention - Cape Town

    Purpose of Role    
    Reporting to the Lead of Western Cape Intervention, the Project Manager will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Western Cape Intervention & WCED rollout Project Plans, Risk Management, Monitoring & Evaluation, Stakeholder Engagement, Training and Talent Management of the WC Intervention.

    To succeed in this role, you will need to be a high-capacity project management expert who works well under pressure, plans, and executes systematically and has strong interpersonal and communication skills. You’re confident, proactive, self-reliant and performance orientated. You also enjoy maintaining processes, risk management, strategic and operational planning and have experience working in an ever changing and diverse environment. Possessing experience in the education field would be advantageous. Having high level administration and technological acumen in Project Management Framework & Systems, Microsoft Office, Excel, Smartsheet, Slack, Dropbox, or equivalents is critical. 

    Objectives of Role    
    WC Intervention & WCED rollout Project Plans

    • Develop and implement the Western Cape Intervention & WCED Roll-Out Project Plans aligned to strategic deliverables while adhering to approved budget and timelines.
    • Oversee office Operations: logistics, materials distribution, asset management
    • Monitor & evaluate WC Intervention & WCED rollout Project Plans through comparing actual performance against planned/ scheduled performance and communicating derailments and resolutions with the project team.
    • Input into Project specific and Operational budgets and monitoring the spend and adhering to an approved budget
    • Proficient use of PM Principles, Methodologies & Systems, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Slack, etc. to ensure timeous and efficient project management delivery.

    Project Risk Management

    • Ensure the development and implementation of the Western Cape Intervention and the WCED rollout Project Risk Management Strategy
    • Oversee each stage of the project and rollout plan, as well as identifying and mitigating risks to all projects.

    Stakeholder Management

    • Build and maintain relationships with WCED department officials and other stakeholders and/or organizations
    • Open and effective communication with the project team members internal and external to the Western Cape Intervention.
    • Ensure systematic document management tools are in place, compile and submit status reports to the Head of the Western Cape Intervention on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
    • Proficient use of Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Slack, and similar tools.

    Training
    Oversee Training interventions, monitor and update the training schedule for the WC intervention and the rollout plan.

    Talent Management

    • In collaboration with the Head: WC Intervention & Talent Manager, identify HR needs and onboarding of talent in the WC Intervention Team
    • Ensure all Performance Management processes and procedures are adhered to for all staff
    • Inculcate adherence to the Disciplinary Code of Conduct and all HR policies among team members
    • Input into the development & implementation of HR Policies and related processes for both internal staff and independent contractors (where applicable); in consultation with /support of HR team. 

    Experience and Qualifications    

    • Relevant degree in Project Management / Development Studies, Education and/or a related field.
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience, preferably in Project Management within philanthropy, education or development sector
    • Proficient in English, isiXhosa and/or Afrikaans

    Maths Specialist - Johannesburg

    Purpose of Role    

    • Reporting to the Maths Lead, the role of the Maths Specialist is to support the implementation of the Maths strategy across all of the implementation interventions from a central office. This will involve working with the provincial teams, participation in the Maths materials research, review and/or development; the development of the Thinking Maths course as well as participating in advocacy at various levels.

    Objectives of Role    
    Materials development and review

    • Coordinate and report on materials review based on internal and external input.
    • Take part in the development and refinement of Bala Wande materials (print and videos) drawing on an in-depth knowledge of the CAPS (Mathematics) to ensure that Bala Wande materials are fully aligned to the National Curriculum..
    • Review and/or proof read Bala Wande materials in order to inform the content, design and sequencing of the materials, reporting to the maths lead.
    • Consult with the Intervention teams in order to engage them in the materials review process – drawing on field inputfor this purpose.
    • Gather, analyse, and interpret data from research to support improvement of the Bala Wande program.
    • Participate in the development of the 12 Module Thinking Maths course.

    Intervention Support & Development

    • Coordinate support required for implementation of the BW materials in the intervention sites.
    • Lead the planning, development and/or refinement of training materials as needed and participate in training sessions as required.
    • Develop/refine training slides and conduct train-the-trainer sessions for the intervention team members and in this way support in the Instructional development of all Foundation Phase teachers in the Bala WandeInterventions.
    • Troubleshooting and using feedback gathered from the intervention teams.
    •  Lead sessions with teams in the provinces to empower them on academic reading and writing.
    •  Encourage provincial team members to submit presentations for, and attend, conferences for their continuous development as expert mathematics field trainers et al..
    • Reporting on all tasks (such as readings sessions; training sessions; meetings with intervention team members).

    Research Monitoring & Evaluation

    •  Take an active role in the Bala Wande Programme research – working with the intervention team specialists in this role.
    •  Take an active role in other Bala Wande research, monitoring and evaluation projects.

    Advocacy

    •  Contribute to writing advocacy/academic papers, etc. about the Bala Wande project and engage with appropriate parties to promote the Bala Wande materials.
    •  Attend meetings and conferences to present on the work of the Bala Wande programme at National platforms (e.g. CIES, COPs, Inter-NGOs and other reference team meetings).
    •  Immerse self in the programme to become its ambassador and able to serve the project optimally.

    Experience and Qualifications    

    •  Minimum Master’s degree in Maths / Maths Education / Education
    •  Minimum 5 years’ experience working in Foundation Phase Maths related work(teaching/lecturing/training).
    •  Own vehicle and driver's license essential.
    •  Demonstrated knowledge of development and review of the Maths school level and tertiary level material
    •  Demonstrated proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office skills.
    •   Demonstrated expertise in oral and written communication in English (any of Sepedi, IsiXhosa, Sesotho and IsiZulu in addition to this will be an advantage).
