RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Manage the team to ensure service desk calls and are resolved within SLA’s, and design and planning of all server changes and foresee possible impact of changes;
- Test, before and after, and provide fall-back plans, and monitor problem solving of server teams;
- Prioritise problems, optimise troubleshooting process, and monitor the operation of server monitoring/alarm systems;
Project management:
- Manage the technical implementation of agreed initiatives working with all required parties to ensure successful delivery according to stakeholder and project office criteria;
- Provide technical expertise and operational insight for all planned projects and work closely with managerial peers in other technology teams to ensure the efficiency, compatibility, security, integrity and ease of ongoing operations of all new server technologies;
- Assist with site inspections, scoping, technical advice, quotations for equipment etc.;
- Manage ITS resources and contractors for projects and work with professional project team, architects, engineers etc.;

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Presenting, allocated undergraduate Invertebrate Biology practicals;
- Setting up and marking of practical tests and practical exams;
- Assisting lecturers to integrate theory and practicals;
- Planning and setting up allocated practicals for lecturers and obtaining live specimens, slides, alcohol material, notes, and posters;
- Curating an Entomological reference collection to aid in Entomological practicals;
- Collaborating with other institutions (e.g., ARC and Ditsong museum) to obtain practical material as well as supplying them with rare student collection material;
- Demonstrating and training students in the use of Entomological techniques and equipment;
- Helping students with the identification of Insect specimens;

- Sorting out and packing away third year students Insect collections (Send material to collections like the National collection, Ditsong museum, and other collectors of specific material);
- Sorting out the old and new alcohol material, insect specimens, Entomological equipment, and see that all the alcohol is topped up in the collections;
- Ensuring safe storage of chemicals used for practicals in Entomological lab;
- Upkeeping of three Entomological store rooms;
- Assisting new Entomology lecturers beginning with their research and starting with materials (mostly live and alcohol and pinned materials) needed for their practicals;

- Allocating students to practical groups and managing the groups for the first-year module;

- Coordinating the departmental roster of lectures and practicals with the “senior academic scheduling specialist” at administration for the following year;

- Ordering the first and second semester “Prescribed and recommended” books for all the under graduate courses on Nevada (for all the undergraduate lecturer);

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Preparation of sequencing libraries for all samples to be sequenced on the Oxford Nanopore Technologies platform (ONT);
- Loading of flow cells and setting up of the PromethION and MinION Instruments to analyse the prepared samples, as well as running and monitoring the instruments;
- Accurate sample quality control before and during library preparation and sequencing;
- Accurate recording and reporting of all laboratory procedures, as well as reagents and consumables used during the workflow for each sample processed;
- Proper storage and handling of all samples, reagents and consumables at all times;
- Careful management of reagent and consumable levels, and timely order requisition for all required reagents and consumables;
- Assisting with data management on sequencing computers;
- Cleaning and setting up of all equipment used in the ONT workflow;
- General laboratory maintenance of the UPGL laboratories. This includes very strict contamination control in potential cross contamination hotspots;
- Communication with clients regarding their samples and progress of the workflow when required;
- Assisting in basic project planning;
- DNA isolations for method development projects of the UPGL;
- Keeping up to date with the latest development in the ONT community and the NGS space in general;
- Optimising new protocols when required;

- Active contribution in workshops hosted by the UPGL.
