    Researcher (Two Positions) (18 Months Fixed Term Contract) - Department of Statistics - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Perform research on the development of indices and their validity;
    • Contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs and technical reports;
    • Prepare and deliver presentations or posters for workshops, consultative meetings, and local and international conferences;
    • Survey the data available at the country level;
    • Identify relevant data that supports the narrative of the volunteering index;
    • Conduct a gap analysis of the data through data mapping and compilation of pertinent data information; 
    • Collate and manage secondary data on volunteerism from local and national governments as well as non-governmental organisations and service providers, including the private sectors;
    • Manage the acquisition, organisation, and management of data;
    • Coordinate data exchange and collaborative research activities with UNV, the project; team, academic collaborators, and any relevant Understanding or Non-Disclosure Agreements;
    • Supervise and co-supervise postgraduate students in Statistics and related fields;
    • Train and mentor focal points from United Nations (UN) member states in data collection and analysis;
    • Assist with academic activities, including project meetings, peer reviews, and workshops; 
    • Liaise between members of the UNV Project and collaborators including local and international academics, and stakeholders;
    • Support the organisation of national and international consultative workshops; 
    • Provide updates and communicate developments with the Project and Stakeholders;
    • Inform public decision-making through reports policy briefs and presentations.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Master's degree in statistics, econometrics or a relevant quantitative field;
    • At least five (5) years of experience in: 
    • High‐quality research in designing and analysing sample surveys;
    • Working in multidisciplinary teams;
    • Working with donor‐funded programmes;
    • Proven experience and proficiency in statistical data analysis software, such as STATA or related packages;
    • A verified publication record;
    • Strong quantitative data analysis skills;
    • Proficiency in statistical analysis software, specifically STATA or similar packages. 

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • High-quality research in designing and analysing sample surveys;
    • Proven experience working in multidisciplinary teams;
    • Minimum 5 years of research or consultancy experience in reliability and validity of measurement or measurement of constructs;
    • Experience working with donor-funded programmes.

    • Proven technical expertise in statistics methods and applications; 
    • Proven ability and experience in data mapping and collating data;

    Associate Professor - Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the Hatfield, Groenkloof and / or Mamelodi Campuses;
    • Provide academic leadership as a teacher, researcher and manager;
    • Conduct research in at least one of the departmental research focus areas (including Mathematics of Finance) and / or initiate a new research direction that lead to publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
    • Supervise postgraduate students;
    • Establish international partnerships and linkages;
    • Be responsible for fundraising relating to academic research;
    • Participate in departmental administration and managerial work;
    • Participate in community engagement.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A PhD degree in Mathematics and / or Applied Mathematics;
    • Experience as an independent researcher at an international level, based on a recent body of quality work within the field that attests to on-going engagement;
    • Excellent teaching experience in learning facilitation, subject mastery, curriculum development, development of learning materials and assessment techniques;
    • Proven experience in supervising Master’s or PhD students to completion.

    Education Consultant (Faculty of Health Sciences), Department for Education Innovation

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Education Consultant will be required to work on and contribute to Education Innovation initiatives, as well as in the designated Faculty with regards to:

    • providing strategic leadership and change management for curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment to advance teaching and learning in the faculty;
    • collaborating with staff in Education Innovation and the designated Faculty to create, implement, monitor and evaluate curriculum, teaching, assessment and learning platforms, systems and policies for the University as they affect hybrid teaching and learning, particularly in contact environments;
    • engaging directly and building relationships with Faculties, Departments, Teaching and Learning Committees and individual academics;
    • Provide initial and continuing professional development for curriculum development, teaching and assessment, as well as tutoring;
    • conducting research as an individual, in a community of practice or in collaboration with academics to stay abreast of trends in all aspects of academic development, as well as contributing to the development of knowledge in these fields through the scholarship of teaching and learning; and
    • Provide support to the Faculty of Health Sciences by promoting a culture of continuous change, improvement and innovation.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Qualifications:

    • Relevant Masters degree.
    • Preference will be given to qualifying candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Studies or Academic Development, or extensive experience in the higher education academic development field.

    Experience:

    • 5 years of higher education or training-related experience
    • 3 years’ experience in institutional initiatives for the academic development of lecturers and students.
    • Experience in using the affordances of technology to promote teaching and learning.
    • Involvement in the development and implementation of innovative academic development strategies that enhance learning and support lecturers’ professional learning.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Change and general project management capabilities.
    • Insight into the functioning and structures of a faculty.
    • Language proficiency and negotiation skills.
    • Coordinating and facilitating training interventions and rendering support to academic staff.
    • Expertise in providing pedagogical support to academics with regard to curriculum design and development.
    • Expertise in identifying, analysing, planning and supporting lecturers with regard to possibilities of flexi-learning environments.
    • Up-to-date knowledge of current trends, including the potential of technology changes for teaching, learning and assessment.

    Head: Education Consultancy (One Post), Department for Education Innovation

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Promote and monitor teaching excellence, as one of the strategic drivers of the university;
    • Provide strategic leadership, management and holistic support to the Education Consultancy Unit’s work at both faculty and institutional levels;
    • Provide operational support regarding curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment, academic development of staff, and student success within a hybrid-learning approach that promotes inquiry-based learning;
    • Provide leadership and management of student feedback to feed into the enhancement and improvement of teaching, learning and assessment practices;
    • Manage stakeholder relationships and communication processes at all levels; 
    • Stay updated with educational developments through research, supporting curriculum development, and managing the professional development of academic staff through training and promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A relevant Masters degree;
    • A teaching qualification (e.g., Postgraduate Diploma in Education/ Academic development) or extensive experience in the higher education academic development field;
    • Ten years of work experience, of which two years in management and includes experience in:
    • higher education, including institutional initiatives for the academic development of lecturers and students;
    • management within the higher education environment that includes human resource and financial management;
    • using the affordances of technology to promote student success, student interventions, academic staff development, institutional research, the scholarship of teaching and learning, etc.;
    • working with donors and other funders (e.g. University Capacity Development Grants);
    • working with teaching, learning or student success projects in higher education. 

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Knowledge of the higher education policy framework as it relates to teaching, learning and student success;

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (One Position) - Department of Statistics - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses; 
    • Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students; 
    • Actively conducting independent and collaborative research and publishing research outputs in accredited journals; 
    • Developing and/or expanding collaboration with academics internationally; 
    • Initiating and delivering specialist courses at national and international levels; 
    • Actively participating in administrative duties within the Department. 

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • A Master’s degree in Statistics that includes a credit-bearing research dissertation and credit-bearing coursework consisting of core components that align with the required responsibilities of the incumbent; 
    • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of accredited publications in core components of the discipline contributing to the literature and scientific field of statistics; at least one recent publication in statistics in an accredited peer viewed journal; 
    • Enrolled for a PhD degree in Statistics with proof of significant progress with the study; 
    • Evidence of papers presented at national conferences; 

    Proven competency and experience are required in:

    • Teaching statistics modules and courses at both undergraduate postgraduate levels as a lecturer; 
    • Advanced knowledge of at least one major statistical software programming language; 
    • Implementation of efficient teaching models that would be applicable in the university setting.

    Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):

    • A Doctoral degree in Statistics
    • Proven record of curriculum development at the undergraduate and postgraduate level or other specialized professional courses; 
    • Evidence of papers presented at national and international conferences; 
    • Proven research publications in accredited journals, of which at least two in the mainstream statistical journals
    • Proven practice of advanced fundamental and applied statistical methodology.
    • Proven record of supervision of postgraduate statistical students 
    • Evidence of supporting and participating in academic citizenship.

    • An NRF rating.

    Senior Lecturer - Department of Auditing

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • Academic administration and management;
    • Supervising of postgraduate students, and
    • Scientific research and publications in accredited academic journals.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Master’s degree in a financial sciences related field and registration with the Institute of Internal Auditors as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA);  OR
    • A relevant doctorate degree in a financial sciences related field;
    • Lecturing experience; and
    • Experience in research and/or involvement in research activities.
