    Manager: Mill (Pulp and Paper)

    Description

    We are hiring!

    • We’re on the lookout for a Mill Manager in Pulp and Paper to direct and control manufacturing, operational, and related activities within the designated process areas through the efficient utilization of resources to ensure maximum contribution to Sappi turnover and profit.

    As a Mill Manager in Pulp and Paper, you will be responsible for:

    • Focusing on industry developments in terms of current and future technical advancements 
    • Reviewing and evaluating performance through reports and budgetary control.
    • Systemically ensuring that all projects and programmes in the designated area are being executed in accordance with plans, schedules and within budget.
    • Setting “stretch” objectives and targets to reduce all types of waste and to ensure department efficiency and delivery to budget.
    • Reviewing operating performances based on world class standards and indices
    • Establishing, planning, motivating and executing asset replacement and capital spend
    • Overall responsibility for legal compliance with regard to SOX, SHEQ, permits and trials relevant to department.
    • Performing annual budgeting, and non-routine work (CAPEX) within a 1–3-year horizon.
    • Directing activities of subordinates to maximise utilization of human and material resources
    • Leading special and technical investigations and analysis of areas of mill operations, as requested by the General Manager.
    • Fostering improved communications throughout the organisation.
    • Preparing reports of operations in the designated areas for the General Manager and senior staff covering legal, financial, compliance to permits, Human Resources and SHEQ.

    What are we looking for?

    • NQF level 8 qualification (BSc. Engineering or related qualification)
    • Completion of a Management Development Programme (MDP) or Executive Development Programme (EDP) will be considered advantageous 
    • 10 Years’ experience in the Paper Manufacturing environment
    • 5 - 8 years of Management experience

    Mechanical Technician

    Description

    • Are you passionate about mechanical maintenance and plant reliability? We're seeking a skilled Mechanical Technician to support plant performance through expert maintenance, problem-solving, and project execution.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and execute Capital and Renewal Projects, including planning, contractor adjudication, team coordination, and cost control.
    • Conduct technical investigations and feasibility studies, identify root causes of failures, and implement sustainable solutions.
    • Provide specialist mechanical support in fault-finding, breakdowns, and equipment performance improvements.
    • Coordinate and monitor statutory inspections (e.g., pressure vessels, structures) and ensure legal compliance.
    • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules, standards (QCPs), and documentation for plant equipment.
    • Utilize systems such as SAP and MDT to support maintenance planning, cost control, and shut execution.
    • Coach and guide operational teams, and step into leadership roles as needed, including stand-by responsibilities.
    • Promote and enforce safety compliance, perform plant audits and lockout inspections, and support continuous improvement aligned with Sappi Fundamentals.

    Requirements:

    • Minimum Qualification: NQF Level 6 – Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
    • Experience: 3–5 years of relevant practical experience in an industrial environment.
    • Advantageous: Experience in the Pulp and Paper industry.

    Boiler & Turbine Technician ERP

    Description

    • We’re seeking an experienced Boiler & Turbine Technician to support the Boiler Engineer with maintenance, shutdowns, and projects, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing boiler and turbine shutdowns, inspections, and modifications.
    • Support the Maintenance Engineer in managing turbine general overhauls (GOs) and maintenance projects, including renewals and Capex.
    • Conduct technical investigations, feasibility studies, and root cause analyses to enhance boiler and turbine reliability.
    • Prepare and update technical specifications, mechanical drawings, and procedures, including piping documentation.
    • Coordinate statutory inspections and ensure compliance with legal and documentation requirements (OHS Act, ASME, PER, EN).
    • Supervise contractors and vendors during shutdowns and project execution, ensuring quality and safety standards.
    • Develop and implement maintenance schedules, tracking performance, reporting, and budgets.
    • Provide standby support when required and act in the Boiler Engineer’s role as delegated.

    Minimum Requirements

    • NQF6: National Diploma / NH Dip. Mechanical
    • Welding Inspector Level 1 & 2 (advantageous)
    • 3–5 years practical experience in boiler and turbine maintenance
    • Experience in welding inspections and quality control
    • Knowledge of scaffolding, non-destructive testing (NDT), refractory, insulation, and cladding
    • Pulp and paper industry experience advantageous

    Maintenance Planner

    Description

    We are hiring!

    • We’re on the lookout for an experienced Maintenance Planner to provide an infrastructure for effective maintenance planning, shut planning, failure analysis and maintenance performance reporting at Tugela Mill in order to become a World Class Business.
    • This role reports directly to the Planning & Development Manager.

    The main responsibilities of this job are to:

    • Co-ordinate and maintain Shut Schedule for effective forward planning.
    • Co-ordinate activities during shuts by liaison with all departments and disciplines (Production, Engineering etc.).
    • Coach engineering & production to ensure compliance to Shutdown Business Process.
    • Provide detailed shut plans for annual shuts and other shuts.
    • Advice Engineers/Foreman on resource requirements from shut plan.
    • Reporting on progress and advice on possible delays during shutdowns.
    • Note and recording all deviations from plan during shut for post mortem discussion & action.
    • Support MDT in all aspects of shut planning and preparation.
    • Assist Planning Administrators to ensure compliance to Shut Planning Business Processes.
    • Ensure continues improvement by regular audits and updating of shut schedules.
    • Establish and co-ordinate action plans to close out non-compliance to shut schedules and shut gaps found on audits.
    • Maintain statutory schedules with regards to plant shuts and coordinate and align shuts as per statutory requirements.
    • Assist in identifying root causes from shut related incidents back to maintenance schedules and update schedules. (loop closure).
    • Develop and manage shut task lists in SAP R/3 for repetitive jobs.
    • Develop and implement Shut measurement tools.
    • Provide Engineering Manager, Planning & Development Manager, and Engineers with shut performance reports.
    • Carry out Shut effectiveness audits.
    • Establish and manage action plans to correct areas of non-conformance found on audits.
    • Assist outside auditors (CAP, ISO etc) when auditing Shut system.
    • Ensure compliance to Shut business processes by regular audits.
    • Establish and manage action plans to correct non-compliance found on audits.
    • Training and coaching other employees on Shut Business Processes
    • Manage integrity of Shut work orders data by regular audits
    • Training and coaching other employees on SAP transactions.
    • Support MDT with all aspects of Shut planning.
    • Responsible to maintain Pressure Vessel Logbook and safekeeping of records and test certificates.

    What are we looking for?

    Relevant Qualifications & Experience

    • Relevant NQF Level 4 with a recognised trade certificate from reputable institutions (Manpower/SETA)
    • Trade Tested (Artisan) with a minimum of 3 – 5 years’ experience.
    • Computer Literacy (SAP & MS Office)
    • Knowledge of maintenance planning systems in the heavy manufacturing industry. Relevant experience is a plus
    • In depth knowledge of SAP PM and ability to identify problem areas and recommend improvements in SAP tasks and business processes

    • Take and hand over shift, ensuring smooth operational continuity.
    • Operate process equipment and instruments in accordance with best operating practices.
    • Complete section-specific interventions and initiatives as planned.
    • Inspect chemical, newsprint, and hardwood loads to ensure compliance with specifications. Prepare warnings or rejection notices and deny mill access to non-conforming or unsafe loads.
    • Record timber receipts, load BOC, and perform quality checks on delivery notes.
    • Communicate with drivers to ensure understanding and compliance with mill safety standards.
    • Identify, communicate, and mitigate risks in line with SHEQ requirements.
    • Receive chip samples from Woodyard Shift Superintendent at start and mid-shift; check sample integrity.
    • Sample and analyse ground wood peeled log. 
    • Evaluate result quality and take corrective action before reporting to customers.

    What are we looking for?

    • Matric (Grade 12) with maths & Physics or N3 in Pulp and Paper.
    • At least a minimum of 3 months relevant experience as Process Trainee.

    • Collect and prepare samples for analysis.
    • Perform laboratory tests using instruments and ISO-compliant methods.
    • Analyze samples to generate accurate data and report results via LIS. 
    • Handle special sample requests as required.
    • Communicate safety issues to Shift supervisor and production personnel.
    • Maintain proper housekeeping in the plants when sampling and ensure housekeeping in main lab
    • Identify, communicate, and mitigate risks in line with SHEQ requirements.
    • Do BBS observations and report Unsafe acts, unsafe conditions and Near miss.

    What are we looking for?
