    Junior Legal Advisor (Post Level 8)

    Duties/Pligte

    • General legal advice and support
    • Promptly responding to enquiries directed to the Legal Services Office.
    • Providing written and verbal feedback on legal enquiries within reasonable timelines.
    • Serving on task teams, providing guidance on legal implications and potential risks.
    • Acting in the best interests of Stellenbosch University after weighing all opinions, interests, and evidence.

    Drafting, reviewing, and vetting legal documents

    • Drafting, reviewing, and vetting legislation, policies, regulations, management documents, and contracts to ensure alignment with applicable laws and SU's interests.
    • Providing detailed commentary and ensuring that amendments safeguard the University's position.

    Legal opinions

    • Preparing thorough, balanced legal opinions on requested matters.
    • Ensuring that opinions provide clear, practical guidance aligned with SU's best interests.

    Liaising with external law firms and stakeholders

    • Acting as internal liaison and communication coordinator for external legal counsel, particularly in litigation matters, as well as any contract-related matters.
    • Maintaining effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and external service providers.

    Legal risk management

    • Identifying, assessing, and managing legal risks.
    • Contributing to policy, guideline, and process development aimed at mitigating legal risk.
    • Reviewing and introducing controls to minimise exposure to legal liability.

    General and administrative duties

    • Working closely and independently with the Senior Legal Advisor and Legal Advisors: Commercial Contracts.
    • Drafting reports and providing timely feedback on consultations and legal developments.
    • Maintaining proper filing, document management, and administrative records.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • LLB or relevant professional law degree.
    • Admission as an attorney or similar registration, OR at least three years' experience as an in-house legal advisor or within a higher education/regulatory environment.
    • At least two years' post-admission experience (if admitted).
    • Knowledge of higher education legislation and related regulatory frameworks (e.g. the Higher Education Act, POPIA, PAIA).
    • Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and policy documents.
    • The ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • Proficiency with MS Office and online research tools.
    • Experience in liaising with external legal providers and institutional stakeholders.
    • A high level of responsibility, sound judgement, and independent decision-making ability.
    • Strong facilitation and coordination skills.
    • The ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities.
    • Professional, courteous, and diplomatic communication style.

    • Prior experience within higher education or another regulated environment.

    B-BBEE Manager

    Duties/Pligte

    • Managing and implementing SU's B-BBEE strategy across the University.
    • Engaging with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
    • Driving initiatives to strengthen all elements of the scorecard.
    • Improving institutional mechanisms for documenting and evidencing scorecard-related transformation activities.
    • Managing the annual B-BBEE audit process and ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
    • Preparing and presenting B-BBEE reports to senior leadership and governance structures.
    • Ensuring compliance with statutory B-BBEE requirements and contributing to policy development.
    • Providing expert input into broader transformation initiatives and responding to ad hoc requests from leadership.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • Relevant bachelor's degree in commerce, business administration, law, or human resources.
    • At least five years' relevant experience, including three years in B-BBEE-related roles (consulting, verification, or similar).
    • Proven, in-depth understanding of B-BBEE legislation and related frameworks (EE, Skills Development Act, King III).
    • Proven skills in project leadership and stakeholder engagement.

    Senior Researcher: Bioinformatics (Post Level 7)

    Duties/Pligte

    • Leading independent bioinformatics, computational biology, or genomic epidemiology research projects.
    • Publishing high-quality research articles in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
    • Developing new analytical methods, pipelines, or computational models.
    • Identifying emerging scientific questions and proposing innovative solutions.
    • Preparing and submitting competitive research grant proposals to national and international funders.
    • Securing funding to support group activities, students, and project expansion.
    • Maintaining a strong publication record aligned with Stellenbosch University's expectations.
    • Building and maintaining computational workflows for genomic analysis (e.g., phylogenetics, variant calling, functional analysis).

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • PhD in molecular biology, genetics or a related field (e.g., bioinformatics or biological sciences with emphasis on transcriptomics and human genomics).
    • At least five years' post-PhD experience in the field of bioinformatics.
    • Proven ability to teach bioinformatics courses effectively at postgraduate level.
    • Experience supervising postgraduate students up to and including PhD level.
    • A record of peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals related to bioinformatics or biomedical research.
    • Experience working with researchers from diverse backgrounds (biology, computer science, statistics).
    • Proven experience in processing and analysing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) high throughput data.
    • Proficiency in at least three programming languages such as Python, R, Bash, Perl or C/C++, C#, Ruby, and/or Java.
    • Data analysis skills: good background in statistical analysis techniques relevant to biological data interpretation.
    • Technical skills: advanced experience with work and setup of computational clusters and servers.
    • Demonstrable high-level proficiency in software development and programming.
