    UX Designer

    Job description

    WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Siyavula is looking for a multi-talented person to take responsibility for building and maintaining the aesthetic of our practice service and marketing media.

In this role, you will provide art direction and visual design expertise. We are a small team and you will work directly with our learning researcher, pedagogy specialists, and front- and back-end developers to create great user experiences.

Exceptional attention to detail, self-awareness and the ability to determine opportunities for your own growth are key.

If you are the candidate we are looking for, you should be excited about the broad scope of this open-ended role, not frustrated by it.

As a UX designer at Siyavula, you will be required to:

    • Maintain and help refine the Siyavula identity across multiple projects

    • Work with our team to create user onboarding experiences, motivational content for learners, data-driven dashboards for parents and teachers, and more

    • Collaborate with marketing team members to drive the look and feel of our content marketing, including social media, blog and PDFs

    • Work with our product manager to develop and continually refine a comprehensive understanding of our users through contextual interviews, usability testing, and behavioural data analysis

    • Create wireframes and mockups with project managers, guide our developers to successfully implement designs, and participate in QA

    • Help create our brand guidelines, and work with our front-end developer on our existing UI style guide

    • Interrogate current or proposed processes in order to effectively solve problems through UX design.

We are looking for someone who is excited about an opportunity to use their skills to enhance the learning experience of 100 000s of learners, and help us reach our goal of helping 10 million aspiring learners in Africa excel in maths and science by 2025. We are passionate about education, and we want to build rich learning experiences to excite learners. If that inspires you, you will fit in perfectly!

    REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

    • 3+ years of professional experience in a UX/web design position, where you've had user research and visual design roles

    • Undergraduate degree in graphic design, web design or a related field, or equivalent past work experience supported by portfolio

    • Excellent problem-solving skills; ability to break down complex concepts, approaches and designs into simple explanations

    • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

    • Solid experience in conducting contextual interviews, usability testing, and behavioural data analysis (Google Analytics)

    • Solid, demonstrable experience in creating journey maps, wireframes, mockups, and other UX deliverables

    • Familiarity with Marvel or equivalent for creating interactive prototypes, or ability to quickly learn

    • Good knowledge of HTML and CSS, and experience with mobile-first, responsive and accessible web design

    • Positive attitude and ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.

    • Very strong communication skills, both written and oral, with natural ability to articulate and defend design decisions and run work sessions.

    • Able to understand and balance customer needs requirements and the holistic business context in which design decisions are made.

    • Ability to iterate your designs and solutions efficiently and intelligently.

    • Be willing to help teammates, share knowledge and experience with them, and learn from them.

    • Be passionate about all things UX and other areas of design and innovation.

    • Strong time management abilities, able to prioritise and start and finish projects without external guidance.
