    Managing Director: Life

    About the role

    The purpose of this role is to provide strategic direction for the growth and successful continuity of the Life Retail and Institutional business. To lead and manage the Life business by collaborating with internal and external clients providing them with innovative solutions.

    To create growth and protect the assets of the business by continually directing its affairs and meeting the legitimate interest of its shareholders and other interested parties. The role has an official seat on the Retail and Institutional Financial Services.

    Job Scope:

    Strategic Planning and Leadership

    • Ensure the business is run on sound commercial and professional principles and that its defined corporate objectives are pursued
    • Maintain and ensure a communication link directly with other Directors and/or shareholders
    • A regular review of the competitive environment is made and appropriate measures are taken to increase the market share and ensure that the business retains its market position as the leading service provider in the industry

    Direct Functions

    • Ensure that the meetings of the Management Committee are regularly held under his/her Chairmanship
    • Meet on a routine basis with the leadership teams to review activity and financial performance and compare them with the targeted business plan
    • Establish quality protocols and meet regularly to review standards as necessary

    Financial Management

    • Manage the business’ profits and losses
    • Ensure that the Department follows good corporate governance and that the monetary information is accurate from which to guide the course of the business
    • Set the budget parameters for the Department, annually

    People Management

    • Create a culture of Performance
    • Manage, support, inform and mentor the senior management team
    • Capacitate the business with the required skills, knowledge and attributes
    • Implement and monitor the talent management and succession planning

    Technical & Behavioural Competencies

    • Knowledge and understanding of budget and revenue management
    • General management skills
    • Strategic insight
    • People skills

    Requirements

    • Minimum B Degree – preferably Post-Graduate Financial or qualified Actuary
    • A business qualification such as an MBA or an Executive Development Programme would also be an advantage
    • Minimum 8 years’ experience in running businesses with direct P&L responsibility
    • 10 – 15 years senior management with at least 8 years in Financial Services industry
    • FAIS Key Individual
