    Regulatory Engagement Manager

    Job Description

    • To contribute to the formulation and implementation of engagement campaign strategies, initiatives and plans to promote a sensible regulatory framework for tobacco in South Africa with governments and relevant regulatory bodies. Responsibilities also include managing relationships with these stakeholders to ensure they know and understand that BAT operates responsibly throughout its operations. Build effective relationships with 3rd parties and value chain partners.
    • Provide support in developing and implementing an Area wide regulatory engagement campaign strategies and approaches
    • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the South African political and regulatory environment and understands the processes that are involved in the development and shaping of national regulations.
    • Understands how the global tobacco control community operates and how it applies pressure to local governments.
    • Is able to help markets respond to regulatory threats and can identify and develop strategies and effective positions and advocacy to ensure campaign success.
    • Analyse and interpret information relating to political activities, issues and events potentially impacting the business, both nationally and internationally, to ensure that the company has a continuous picture of the regulatory environment to ensure timely and remedial action can be taken as required
    • Ensure that key government stakeholders in SA understand the company’s positions and viewpoints
    • Align with the Region and Group on the approach to developing and implementing regulatory campaigns
    • Monitor and anticipate the direction and implications of the regulatory environment and ensure the business has the appropriate support to ensure effective engagement
    • Provide input and active support to regulatory engagement managers across SA, and ensure regular monitoring, tracking and reporting to senior management
    • Act as a key liaison point, in conjunction with the Head of Regulation with relevant individuals and stakeholder groups, both internal and external, on regulatory and government issues affecting the industry
    • 4-year relevant degree
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in regulatory engagement
    • South African nationality Ability to engage, communicate and influence a wide range of stakeholders and build relationships
    • Ability to prioritise and innovate
    • Resilient
    • Strong understanding of key tobacco control issues and technical expertise on key regulatory issues and campaign processes
    • Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory process
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    • 3rd party stakeholder management and mobilisation
    • Execute robust national and international engagement campaigns
    • Political analysis and an understanding of politics, international affairs, social policy and economics.
