    Programme Director: Innovation Diagnostics Accelerator (IDA) for Global Health

    Job description

    Main purpose of the job

    To manage, coordinate, monitor and source projects falling under the mandate of the Innovation Hub and its related network of stakeholders.

    Background

    This project will be supported by a number of Global and local stakeholders with a mandate to source, support and implement novel diagnostics, processes and strategies to accelerate access to affordable, appropriate diagnostics to support patient care. The emphasis will reside not only on diagnostic assays but the requirements for improving the Clinic-Laboratory-Interface (pre- and post-analytic). The hub will support a network of partners throughout Africa. The team involved is supported by partners that include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PEPFAR (CDC and USAID), the Global Fund, Clinton Health Access, ASLM, National Institutes of Health (USA), to name a few.

    Key performance areas

    • Manage, coordinate and drive the selection and implementation of projects and programmes within the organization to ensure the objectives and milestones are aligned with the Innovation Hub’s vision.
    • Develop short- and long-term strategic plans to drive and strengthen the organisation and its networks.
    • Scoping of projects and development of plans.
    • Foster close relationships with, in-country partners and other relevant donors and stakeholders.
    • Lead, mentor and develop staff members/research students to ensure that they perform optimally to acquire skills to achieve programme goals and maintain academic affiliations.
    • Monitor and evaluate programme indicators, and measure performance/impact of interventions.
    • Ensure all activities and operations are performed in compliance with local and state regulations and laws governing operations in South Africa and within neighbouring countries.
    • Represent the organisation at local and international meetings/conferences and be responsible for dissemination of accurate information.
    • Manage financial administration of grants.
    • Manage and strengthen the quality assurance for the organisations’ activities.
    • Ensure a supportive Information technology environment to meet the needs of the program.

    Required minimum education and training

    • Preference will be given to applicants that are registered as Specialist Pathologists or Scientists (PhD) in Laboratory Medicine and Science
    • Field and laboratory experience in high burden priority diseases such as HIV, TB, hepatitis B and non-Communicable diseases will be advantageous
    • Strong laboratory background is essential
    • Financial and budget development skills is necessary
    • Experience in grant and project management
    • Academic and report writing essential

    Professional body registration

    • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa

    Required minimum work experience

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience in project management
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in laboratory diagnostics

    Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

    • Certification in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and Good Clinical Practice
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • High proficiency in computer literacy
    • Excellent negotiation and networking skills
    • Excellent budgeting skills
    • High-level presentation skills
    • Ability to travel
