    Software Engineer

    Job description

    We are seeking a special software engineer to join our Machine Learning business. We offer a product suite and develop bespoke services for a wide range of clients in many different sectors—touching on several parts of their businesses. Our work is often utterly transformative and so we need a high-impact team to deliver these extraordinary results.

    You have a minimum of 3 years experience working with several python stacks in Linux, including Flask and Django. You need a comprehensive understanding of Redis, and PostgreSQL/MySQL as well as experience with DevOps tools like SaltStack, Git, Terraform, and Docker.

    Our solutions are often hosted on various cloud services and you should be able to spin up AWS instances and configure load balancing between Azure services. To support you in this it is necessary to have a deep understanding of networking principles, protocols and security. Your experience in building and running a real live, distributed production system will help your submission.

    Our business often rapidly prototypes and then scales the solutions to many customers, and so you need an understanding or experience in scaling real time web services & systems without affecting the customer's experience.

    We are deeply security conscious, and a solid understanding of network, Linux and web application security is critical to your successful career development.

    You are a self starter with a keen eye for detail, work well under pressure, and can deliver superb engineering content to a diverse team of data scientists and engineers.

    You are ahead if you also have a working knowledge of several other programming languages: C/++, Go, Erlang, or Haskell. If you have played with Kafka, and Mesos you should tell us about this! Evidence of your own projects, repos, and experience with machine learning algorithms will set your application ahead of the pack.

    Qualifications:

    You should have some formal qualification, survived varsity with one of the following:

    • BSc Eng in a relevant field (Electrical Engineering; Information Engineering/Systems; Network engineering; or similar);
    • BSc Comp Sci with network or ops experience; or
    • BCom IS/IT with substantial work experience in this field.

    Work experience:

    We're not looking for a junior, so we're looking to understand your experience in using the tools of the trade (but don't really mind where you've used them):

    • Worked in some production environment, driving the code sausage-machine;
    • Had at least one time when everything has fallen apart—and then fixed it;
    • Understand that customers may not always love you, but seek to fix that;
    • Have successfully dealt with that team member who's more passenger than pilot;
    • Share your thinking in situations where it is too easy to keep quiet;
    • Understand that a marathon may have more than one sprint in it.

    Can you do any of these awesome things:

    We have exciting days, if you do these kinds of things we want to hear from you:

    • Know your public key from your private key - and which you can share;
    • Can merge a pull request; push a branch to a remote repo; and nuke a ticket;
    • Spin up an AWS instance to compute feature vectors and persist the results in an RDS;
    • Refactor a monolithic POC into a microservice architecture that scales automatically; or
    • Retrain a model and push the results to an endpoint with a RESTful API?

    We work hard and change the world. We'd love you to be part of this exciting journey.

    We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
