    Chief Financial Officer

    Job description

    Role Description:
    Reporting tthe Managing Director, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) actively supports the Managing Director in the development and execution of corporate strategy through design, deployment and management of financial functions, systems and processes. The CFplays a core leadership role in the executive team and together with the MD, acts as an interface tthe board of directors, exercising financial judgement and guiding the allocation of capital resources.

    OVERVIEW OF CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

    Strategic leadership

    • Provide strategic financial leadership tthe business toptimise the company’s financial performance and tensure appropriate funding tenable strategic plans;
    • Contribute fully tthe development of the company strategy across all areas of the business, challenging assumptions and decision-making as appropriate and providing financial analysis and guidance on all activities, plans, targets and business drivers.
    • Be the custodian of financial governance and shareholders’ and funders’ interests.

    Financial leadership and direction

    • Assume responsibility for the overall finance and accounting function of the company.
    • Develop scenarios and models tensure the effective deployment of capital.
    • Ensure that company financial systems are fit for purpose, robust, compliant and support current activities and future growth.

    Budget

    • Prepare annual budgets for approval by the Board of Directors
    • Oversee the budget process, monitoring and reviewing functional submissions
    • Monitoring of actual and forecast business performance against budgets
    • Actively managing the cash resources of the company, including forecasts and projected funding requirements

    Financial Reporting

    • Assume overall responsibility for financial reporting tinternal and external stakeholders
    • Presentation of monthly and annual accounts with recommendations.Develop, implement and ensure compliance with all internal financial controls, policies and procedures
    • Ensure that financial reports are accurate and in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards
    • Continuous monitoring of actual performance against set targets, including margins, VNB, cashflow, CAPEX etc;
    • Key liaison with the corporate tax advisors, auditors and other service providers
    • Business owner of the core policy host system, including the monthly debit order and collections process and remittances treinsurers
    • Presenting financial results tthe Board and Exco.

    Financial actuarial management

    • Assume overall responsibility for the company’s actuarial valuation and reporting requirements
    • Oversight of the preparation of data, analysis and reports tensure the company meets its periodic actuarial valuation and reporting requirements
    • Develop and implement internal systems, models and reporting capabilities tensure monthly VIF, VNB and EV reporting tstakeholders.
    • Monitoring the monthly VIF, VNB and EV against budget and evaluating proposals and trade-offs tensure the targets are reached.

    Collaboration

    • Provide thought partnership and guidance tother executives, team members and business functions tensure alignment and development of effective divisional strategies that support the achievement of overall business objectives.
    • Engage all stakeholders proactively tmanage expectations and delivery;

    Project management

    • Sponsor and execute on key finance projects and change initiatives;
    • Provide thought leadership in overseeing certain key organisational change projects through active participation in project steering committees;

    Sustainability and governance

    • Direct the development of a sound organisational plan, including retention and succession planning for key employees, codification of organisational knowledge, application of sound controls and risk management and promoting a culture of ethical behaviour.
    • Ensure that all finance activities are performed in compliance with relevant laws, regulations and policies governing business operations;
    • Apply effective risk management in managing finance and promote a culture of risk awareness and responsibility;

    Candidate Profile

    • CA (SA) in good standing
    • 15 years’ experience in accounting and financial management
    • 3-5 years relevant board / executive management experience
    • Previous life insurance / financial services experience will be beneficial
