Mission/ Core purpose of the Job
The role of the Advertising Data Scientist is to leverage internal and, where applicable, external datasets to build and evolve, using “best practice” methodologies and statistical techniques, MTN’s targeted advertising capabilities within and across MTN’s territorial footprint (OpCo’s).
The Data Scientist is responsible to support respective advertising strategies and the associated product/roll-out roadmap, taking direction and guidance for the SM: Advertising to ensure prioritisation and standardisation of deliverables. The Data Scientist is also responsible to contribute towards the advertising operational performance, both at a product portfolio and OpCo level.

Key Deliverables
The Advertising Data Scientist will be accountable to achieve the following objectives:
Strategy Development and Implementation
- Provide data insights and conduct detailed analysis on data to support strategic decision making
- To analyse markets and competitors detect business opportunities.
Governance
- Provide input in strategic meetings when required
- Provide inputs into the risk mitigation and controls
- Provide input into the preparation of proposal on change initiatives, policies and procedures
Escalations
- Escalate issues that will result in severe time, scope, productivity, and cost or resource impact
- Provide solutions to escalations that have multiple processes / functions impact on critical path of service delivery
Function Tactical
- Provide input into all projects initiated
- Provide input into establishing objectives, targets and budgets for the function as applicable
- Identify and document key risks, issues and dependencies and set mitigation actions
- Prepare documentation required for sign-off / making decisions regarding tactical changes
Performance
- Ensure execution in alignment with divisional strategy
Reporting
- Report on a periodic basis to the Reporting Manager relating to progress made within the function and in accordance with the measurement metrics set by the organisation
- Report on an ad hoc basis on specific projects, as required
Budgets
- Assist in managing functional budgets in line with overall budget and business objectives
- Assist in managing project initiative budgets in line with business objectives
Operational Delivery
- Support in the development of a data strategy to enable the execution of the advertising strategy
- Develop, continuously improve and execute an efficient framework to identify, organize, structure and make available data attributes and information relevant for digital advertising
- Define and continuously optimize targeting approaches for Digital advertising
- Produce Product Specification documents, Scope of Work documents, Code of Conduct document with regards to data management needs for advertising strategy
- Source, organise and analyse data to support the digital advertising strategy
- Analyse and support plan to improve sales target and productivity through data led insight
Job Requirements (Education, Experience and Competencies)
Education:
- Minimum of 3-year tertiary degree / diploma (Bachelors of science, Engineering or related field)
- MBA or Masters (advantageous)
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in telecommunications, digital marketing, eCommerce sales, digital product management, content, media and/or application
- Deep knowledge of Advertisement, value Added Services experience
- Experience with Agile delivery and Development Operations frameworks
- Deep understanding of the digital ecosystem, players, business models and industry related best practices.
- Experience in ecommerce and electronic payment business is advantageous.

- Strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking
- Experience with Google Analytics or equivalent is advantageous

- Proficiency in working with Python, SAS or R / Scala for data clean up and advanced data analytics
- Knowledge on Deep Learning and its applications.
- Strong analytical skills with ability to automate reports using standard enterprise BI tools like Tableau, Power BI, D3, SQL Server Reporting Services
- Working knowledge in Hadoop, Apache Spark and related Big Data technologies
- Highly proficient in database management systems like Postgres, Oracle, Mongo, MSSQL
- Ability to design, deploy and maintain machine learning and predictive model for different business use cases
